Voyager’s Danny Estrin on his Eurovision-to-TV journey: “It’s very exciting”

The 2026 SBS Eurovision coverage’ special guest host – Voyager-front man - Danny Estrin has officially arrived on the television landscape.

Three years after representing Australia with his band at Eurovision in Liverpool, the Perth-based immigration lawyer and rocker will join the who’s who of Australian television at the Logie awards in Sydney this weekend.

“It’s bloody gorgeous here - I’m going to Sydney for the Logies tomorrow – this sunshine better continue over East,” he said from his home in sunny Perth this morning.

These will be Danny’s first Logies – but with his star turn as a Eurovision co-commentator with Courtney Act earlier this year in Switzerland and now his new television show Precious Metal starting on SBS next month – it might not be his last.

And he’s ready to embrace it “nineties style – red carpet and all”

 “It’s very exciting -I’d better get my outfit ready,” he said.

And his outfit is likely to be a little familiar, we are going to see more from the Perth-based fashion label Zhivago – who designed Voyagers costumes for Eurovision and whose work incidentally popped up in Danny’s new documentary series.

“Definitely – though in a different material,” he laughed.

“I can’t recycle – well I can – but not too many times.”

His Eurovision costumes were used throughout Precious Metal, the new factual information show set to premiere on SBS2 and SBS on Demand on Wednesday, 2 September at 8.30pm.

Precious Metal is described as a love story like no other. Different, passionate people, and the cars that have become their obsession. But this is not just about beauty, speed, aspiration and affluence. In a world of insatiable consumerism, this is a story about individuality and the joy that comes from seeing something beyond the sum of its parts. Think Julia Zemiro’s Home Delivery rather than blokey car shows like Top Gear - It’s warm, informative and full of cars and characters and Danny in sequins (totally unplanned).  

“We started the show with Eurovision and me on stage and the glitter and stuff and then me in the car,” he said.

“I thought – well started with me on such a high, I can’t just go back to normal clothes now – so I’ll just keep wearing the jackets, which is amazing, it really stands out.

“Unfortunately, most of it was shot in summer so it was extremely hot for most of it.

“I think some microphones melted in the making of it. But we just thought the continuity was cool and it was something different and one of the things that is hilarious is that we never really speak about the outfit - ever.

“It’s just there, it’s just thing that I wear – it’s like oh yeah this is what I do.”

Not that he didn’t get “a few interesting looks” particularly when they went out to the farming community of Bruce Rock.

“We were stopped on the side of the road at some truck stop and got some side glances, but that’s ok – we’re a confident land,” Danny chuckled.

“There was one great moment, I can’t remember where it was, it was probably halfway out to Esperance.

“We get out and I’m wearing the glitter for some reason and this bloke, this really rough country bloke, pulls up his ute – he is there with his wife – he barely gets out, he’s huge. He walks towards me and I think, oh god.

“He stops and he looks at me, points his fingers and says ‘you’re that bloke from Eurovision aren’t ya?’ and I said yeah –‘me and my wife we love it come and get a photo.’ I thought this is awesome – it was brilliant.”

So, for those wondering what the Eurovision viewership is like – it’s wide.

“It’s very wide,” he laughed.

The 66th TV WEEK Logie Awards will be available to stream for free, and in HD on 7plus and to watch free-to-air on Channel 7 from 7pm-7.30pm for the red carpet and from 7.30pm-11.30pm for the main coverage.

Precious Metal is a five-part series on SBS2 and on Demand from 2 September.
