SBS release statement on the newly announced Eurovision Song Contest Asia.

Today, the European Broadcasting Union confirmed that Eurovision Song Contest Asia will debut in 2026, with Bangkok announced as the host city.

The inaugural contest will feature 10 countries from across Asia, including Thailand, South Korea, the Philippines and Vietnam, with more expected to be announced in the coming months.

Australia was not included in the initial line-up, prompting immediate questions about its involvement.

Aussievision contacted SBS to clarify Australia’s position.

SBS confirmed that Australia will not be competing in the 2026 edition.

In a statement, the broadcaster said:

“SBS has long recognised the strong appetite for Eurovision and its unique ability to connect audiences through music and shared cultural moments.

While SBS is not competing in this newly announced Eurovision Asia initiative, we’re pleased to see continued interest in celebrating these kinds of connections across the region and will be watching with interest as it develops.”

Australia’s absence is notable given its long and central role in the development of Eurovision Asia.

SBS had an existing role

Plans for an Asian version of the contest date back nearly a decade, with SBS originally announcing the project in 2016 and expected to play a leading role in its launch.

An inaugural edition was initially targeted for 2017, but the project faced repeated delays before being shelved entirely.

In 2021, SBS confirmed it had formally stepped away from the concept, citing the challenges of bringing the contest to life, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite these setbacks, momentum returned in 2022 when former Australian Head of Delegation Paul Clarke indicated that Eurovision Asia remained a priority behind the scenes.

The newly announced 2026 contest marks the first time the project has officially reached a confirmed launch stage, with a new group of broadcasters and partners now driving it forward.

While Australia will not be part of the inaugural edition, SBS’s position leaves open the possibility of future involvement as the contest develops.
