Eurovision 2027: Farewell to the Turquoise Carpet?

After six years of turquoise carpets, Moroccanoil’s partnership with the Eurovision Song Contest has come to an end.

The haircare brand will not return as the contest’s Presenting Partner for Eurovision 2027 in Bulgaria, ending a relationship which began in 2019 for the 2020 Contest.

That edition was cancelled due to COVID-19, meaning Moroccanoil ultimately served as Presenting Partner for six Contests: Rotterdam 2021, Turin 2022, Liverpool 2023, Malmö 2024, Basel 2025 and Vienna 2026.

A highly visible branding partner, Moroccanoil has appeared extensively across official Eurovision content, including live to air advertising during the competition.

It has also offered in-kind support to the contest, supplying professional hairstylists and hair products to participating artists throughout rehearsals and live shows.

Moroccanoil's departure now brings one of Eurovision's longest commercial partnerships to a close.

It has been reported the decision to cease the Eurovision partnership was taken by Moroccanoil itself, with the confirmation provided by a statement from the EBU to New York Times cultural reporter Alex Marshall.

"We can confirm that, after six successful years, Moroccanoil has chosen not to renew its sponsorship of the Eurovision Song Contest... we wish Moroccanoil every success for the future."

The partnership has come under greater criticism in recent years due to the brand's connections to Israel, including co-owner Ofer Tal. Despite its name, Moroccanoil is not a Moroccan company.

It was established in Israel, has manufacturing operations there and today describes itself as a global beauty company headquartered in New York. Its departure comes one day after a rule change that prevents countries in armed conflicts from hosting, and amid deepening criticisms around Israel’s participation in Eurovision.

While a hunt for a new Presenting Partner will no doubt be underway, neither the EBU nor Moroccanoil has ever publicly disclosed the financial terms of the agreement. The financial gap the missing Presenting Partner funds leaves remains unknown.

The brand's most visible legacy has been Turquoise Carpet at Eurovision’s Opening Ceremony, a nod to Moroccanoil’s signature brand colour, and a fixture of the Eurovision visual language for more than half a decade.

Eurovision's opening ceremony hasn't always been turquoise, however. Lisbon famously rolled out a blue carpet in 2018, while Tel Aviv used an orange carpet in 2019. But from Rotterdam in 2021, the opening ceremony welcome carpet has been wall to wall turquoise.

So, with Moroccanoil gone, the big question for Eurovision 2027 in Burgas is:

What colour will the famous welcome carpet be?

Does turquoise survive now that it has become a Eurovision tradition of its own? Does new Presenting Partner branding determine the colour? Or, after six years, does the Burgas Eurovision welcome carpet actually go back to red?
