SBS Eurovision 2023: Grand Final replay – Who did the Australian public like?

Tonight SBS aired the primetime replay of the Grand Final of Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool.

Just as in Friday and Saturday night's airing of Semi-Finals 1 and 2, Australian viewers could vote for their favourite songs from the Grand Final by selecting the thumbs up or thumbs down emoji on the SBS Eurovision site during each performance.

Who did Australia love most?

Well not surprisingly, the winner of the night was Australia with 95% of voters loving the song!

But if we're playing by Eurovision rules, you can't vote for the act from your own country. This means Finland becomes our winner with 'Cha Cha Cha' being loved by 87% of voters.

Unsurprisingly Cyprus also polled well, finishing in equal 4th place with 80% of viewers giving Australia's Andrew Lambrou the thumbs up!

In fact, Australians loved 20 of the 26 songs performed in the Grand Final with only six getting the 'Nope' vote.

How accurate were the Australian viewers?

Looking at the full results of tonight's SBS viewer vote we can see that the results differed quite significantly from the real televote results of the 37 participating countries and the Rest of the World.

SBS viewers only had four countries in the Top 10 that also came top 10 in the real televote. These were Sweden, Finland, Norway and Moldova.

When we look at Ukraine and Israel (4th and 5th in the televote), Australians were not as keen on these songs as the rest of the world, ranking them in equal 15th and 20th respectively.

Australian Televote at Eurovision

Finland - 12 points

Sweden - 10 points

Cyprus - 8 points

Austria - 7 points

Norway - 6 points

Israel - 5 points

Croatia - 4 points

Belgium - 3 points

France - 2 points

Slovenia - 1 point

When we exclude Australia and compare the SBS voters results to the real Australian televote, we see a much higher correlation.

Finland topped the results with both and Austria, Norway, Cyprus, France, Belgium and Sweden were also ranked highly.

However there were also some major differences. The SBS viewers preferred Czechia, Moldova and Estonia whilst the real Australian televoters gave their remaining points to Israel, Croatia and Slovenia.
