In one of two huge Eurovision national finals from the Nordic region this weekend, Norway will pick its entrant when this year's Melodi Grand Prix is staged in Lillehammer.
After sinking to a wooden spoon in 2024, Norway finished 18th at last year's contest in Basel, Switzerland with Kyle Alessandro's Lighter. This year's MGP lineup consists of eight internally selected acts, with Skrellex joining the lineup as the ninth finalist from a publicly-voted radio contest.
12 members of the Aussievision team have listened to the 9 finalists and scored them in the traditional style of 12-10-8 for their top 3 acts, followed by 6 points to 1 point for the rest of the pack.
Here's the results on who we think Norway should send to Vienna in May!
9: Alexander Rybak – Rise - 33 points
Highs: 12 from Dale, 6 from Kiel
Lows: 2 from Fleur, 1 from Sam, Cooper, Joel, Kyriakos, Hayley and Craig
“I didn't actually want to rank this 1st but I honestly think this is the best overall package and has instant appeal to me. It might be the nostalgia but it's Fairytale part II (And I don't even like Fairytale that much!). But this is done so well and it has immediate appeal that I really enjoy.” ~ Dale
“This is not a fairytale… please don’t follow the instructions on how to write a song because this is what you get.” ~ Fleur
“AR stands for not only Alexander Rybak but awful Rise or absolute rubbish. I think this will win due to name recognition, but so undeserved..” ~ Sam
“Sounds everything like Fairytale II — a bit of a lazy entry. Honestly mate, you don’t need to be here.” ~ Kiel
8: Hedda Mae – Snap Back - 47 points
Highs: 8 from Fleur, Joel and Kyriakos, 6 from Rebecca Lows: 2 from Srdjan, Kiel and Craig, 3 from Sam and Hayley
7: Leonardo Amor – Prayer - 48 points
Highs: 12 from Kyriakos, 6 from Hayley, Dale Lows: 1 from Joel and Srdjan, 2 from Sam, Cooper and Tim
“What a stunning ballad! I am speechless!! Cannot wait to see this live.” ~ Kyriakos
6: Storm – Lullaby - 49 points
Highs: 10 from Hayley, 6 from Srdjan
Lows: 2 from Joel and Dale, 3 from Kyriakos
5: Silke – Forevermore - 67 points
Highs: 12 from Tim, 10 from Joel Lows: 1 from Kiel and Rebecca, 5 from Fleur, Sam and Hayley
"There’s something very positive and impactful about this song. Yeah it’s probably not the most modern song of the selection but it’s got a good beat to it and it has a strong sound to it. I really enjoy the Norwegian element of the song." ~ Tim
"2000’s cheesy eurodance is exactly my genre and this song serves it in SPADES! Will it win? Probably not. But is it fun to dance around the house to? Absolutely!" ~Joel
4: Jonas Lovv – Ya ya ya – 69 points
Highs: 12 from Rebecca, 10 from Craig
Lows: 1 from Tim, 3 from Dale
"This has a certain sound that I honestly can't ever recall hearing at Eurovision before. Not only is it an earworm, it's so utterly refreshing. The electric guitar riff is so clear and catchy. And honestly, the repetiveness of the chorus would usually irk me, but here I'm not bothered in the slightest. Absolutely love it." ~ Rebecca
"This feels very Australia-coded to me, and I am quite enjoying it! Catchy hook, great production and a charismatic lead - I think this is a little underrated!" ~ Craig
3: Skrellex – Into The Wild - 74 points
Highs: 12 from Fleur and Craig, 10 from Kiel
Lows: 1 from Dale, 2 from Kyriakos and Tim
"Skrellex with a sea shanty EDM banger. Yes, please. Honestly this is the best of this year's competition by a mile." ~ Fleur
"Is this particularly original or competitive in a Eurovision setting? Not really. Is it nonetheless a lot of fun? Sure! We have past proof that Skrellex can bring the party in a live setting, and this is a good enough song to let them do what they do best." ~ Craig
"It's pretty telling about the quality of this year's field that the fan-voted entry is up so high (in my votes anyways!) Honestly though, this has some pretty slick production and if staged correctly, could be a good contender to get the ticket to Vienna." ~ Kiel
"I love Skrellex and this song is solid stomper, but the melody sounds like an absolute rip off Keiino’s Monument. Which is why I have marked it down a bit." ~ Sam
"As much as it kills me not to give this very talented Queen 12 points, this song is waaaay below In Love Again in quality. It has the sea-shanty vibe of Alessandra which quite frankly, has overstayed its use at Eurovision now." ~ Hayley
2: Emma – Northern Lights - 78 points
Highs: 12 from Sam, Cooper and Joel, 10 from Srdjan Lows: 2 from Hayley, 3 from Kiel
"This song is so Norwegian it deserves to represent its country at Eurovision. Every few years Norway reminds us of its place in northern Europe, and I think it is high time it happened again. Ethereal, eclectic, exciting. Oh and she has the same name as one of our lovely AV contributors – Emma!" ~ Sam
"This song is the clear standout of this national selection. Northern Lights has that perfected scandi pop production paired with the most stereotypical lyrics that sound right out of the Eurovision Movie. If her older brothers are anything to go by, Emma will smash it at Eurovision!" ~ Cooper
"This is actually a real solid pop song, with just enough drama to give it a mature sound beyond Emma’s 17 years. I can’t wait to see what she does with it in a live environment - if I don’t see cliched splashes of green and purple northern lights on the screen I’ll be disappointed!" ~ Joel
"It is a nice, safe pop song that stands out from the rest of the lineup and has a Eurovision vibe that could help Norway reach the final once again in May." ~ Srdjan
1: Mileo – Frankenstein - 102 points
Highs: 12 from Srdjan, Kiel and Hayley, 10 from Fleur, Sam, Cooper, Kyriakos, Rebecca, Tim and Dale Lows: 6 from Joel, 8 from Craig
"The best song by miles and a great follow up to Mileo's 2024 MGP entry, which is one of my favourite NF entries ever and was completely robbed. This is the most competitive entry of MGP this year for me and the only one that has a chance of achieving a somewhat decent result for Norway." ~ Srdjan
"I'll be frank, the offerings from this year's NGP field are pretty uninspiring and generic. For the sake of a tiny bit of Aussie pride given he was born here, and also because Frankenstein sounds just a tiny bit out of the box - I hope Mileo takes it out. If Norway doesn't want Europe to utter a collective 'Meh' in Vienna, he's the best guy to avoid it." ~ Kiel
"It is catchy as! Would be great to see this superstar get through to Eurovision!" ~ Hayley
"Honestly I prefer You're Mine from a couple of years ago, but it's catchy. I'm looking forward to seeing the cheesy staging more than anything." ~ Fleur
"In this Frankenstein of a national selection, Mileo’s monster masterpiece stands out. Can’t wait to add this to the Eurovision Halloween playlist." ~ Sam
"What a bloody catchy song, that chorus is a chefs kiss! Would love to see Norway send this to Eurovision!" ~ Kyriakos
"MGP seems to have a knack for catchy choruses. This song takes a unique concept and makes it work to an almost radio-friendly degree. I feel like the end is missing some sort of vocal payoff (High notes? Key change? Not sure) but overall it's an extremely solid song with potential for lots of growth. ~ Rebecca
"It’s got a good modern sound to it and it definitely stands out amongst the other competitors. It’s a pretty decent song and would get Norway a result they could be proud of." ~ Tim
"The chorus of this is SOOO good and I love the message Mileo is sending after his troubles in 2024. This isn't just the Aussie patriotism talking but this is a cracking entry and he can really write a song. I think the live of this can bring this to life even more." ~ Dale
