Eurovision Asia 2026: Meet Malaysia's Aina Abdul

Written by Michael Montenegro
Malaysia is preparing to make its Eurovision Asia debut, with singer Aina Abdul set to represent the country at the inaugural Contest in Bangkok, Thailand.
But who is the artist behind the name, and how did she earn the chance to represent her country?
Here’s everything we know about Aina Abdul's journey to Eurovision Asia 2026.
About Aina Abdul
Aina Abdul, whose full name is Nurul Aina Abdul Ghani, was born on 25 October 1993 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and raised in Seremban. Aina started out singing in restaurants and lounges and later earned a Bachelor of Contemporary Music at UCSI University in Kuala Lumpur.
In 2014 Aina was runner-up on Mentor Legend, a Malaysian TV singing competition, coached by rock singer Ella. That year Aina also won a vocalist title at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood. In 2020 came a win on the first season of The Masked Singer Malaysia.
The song Sumpah reached the final of the 34th Anugerah Juara Lagu in 2020.
Semalam was runner-up at the 35th edition, and Sepi won Best Vocal at the 36th.
Terus Hidup, written by Aina, won the 37th edition on 12 February 2023, along with Best Vocal. Best Vocal followed again at the 38th edition for Jangan Mati Rasa Itu.
Aina's debut album Imaji followed in 2023.
At the 24th Anugerah Industri Muzik ("Music Industry Awards") in September 2025, Aina won four awards: Best Song, Best Pop Song and Best Female Vocal, all for Jangan Mati Rasa Itu, and Best Album Recording for Imaji Deluxe Edition.

Aina has performed several big events. Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur hosted Aina on 18 November 2023, with about 10,000 people attending.
In May 2024, two nights at the Petronas Philharmonic Hall brought a collaboration with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
Aina's singing style
Malaysian press describe Aina as a vocal powerhouse with a powerful, soulful voice.
Aina's songwriting covers mainly ballad, pop, soul and R&B, and Adele, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé are among the named inspirations.
When Aina won the 37th Anugerah Juara Lagu, head judge Mokhzani Ismail praised the powerful vocals and honest performance.
At the 2024 orchestra concert, an English-language medley including At Last and Hero earned a standing ovation, according to the Malaysian news agency Bernama.
Aina is also known for dramatic staging and big outfits, and is nicknamed Malaysia's "big dress girl", a label Aina is happy to embrace.
About the song Bluest Sky
Bluest Sky is a powerful and emotional ballad, released by Malaysia's broadcaster TV3 on 8 October.
Aina wrote and composed it, and it was produced by Mac Chew, Aina's longtime musical director, arranger and co-producer. The song has a large-scale musical arrangement with a long, soaring high note at the end.
Aina describes the song as a confession and a love letter to someone important in life, whom Aina has not named.
Malaysian outlets describe it as a story of love, sadness and uncertainty in a relationship, with a message of hope that hard times do not last forever.
Recording took 10 hours in the studio, and Aina called it one of the most emotionally demanding songs of the career so far.
Eurovision limits songs to three minutes, while Aina usually performs songs of up to five minutes, so a range of emotions had to fit into a much shorter space.
Aina called the contest a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and said finishing the song has cost some sleep. The song was presented at a listening event on 8 October at REXKL on Kuala Lumpur's Petaling Street, themed around clouds.
What to expect from Aina Abdul at Eurovision Asia
Staging details have not been announced, but a slow ballad like this is likely to put the focus on Aina alone.
A performance built around the singer would probably have no choreography, with dramatic staging and lighting designed around the slow tempo and a heavy build-up of set and effects towards the final note. Contest rules allow up to six performers on stage and three minutes.
That would fit Aina's track record. Aina reportedly spent RM400,000 on the performance at the 38th Anugerah Juara Lagu, and called the giant-heart staging at the 39th the most expensive yet.
At the 40th, Kamu was performed in a volcano-themed costume by designer Melinda Looi, with more than 80 people working behind the scenes on staging, lighting, visuals, audio and styling.
How was Aina Abdul selected for Eurovision Asia 2026?
Aina was announced as Malaysia's representative at the 40th Anugerah Juara Lagu ("Song Champion Awards") in August 2026.
This is Malaysia's long-running national song competition, and Aina also won Best Performance there with the song Kamu.
A professional jury made the artist choice. Malaysia was the second country to announce its artist for Eurovision Asia, the first multi-country expansion of the Eurovision Song Contest, in which 11 countries will take part.
Malaysia will compete in the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest Asia on 14 November 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.
