Eurovision 2027: Decision delayed between two Bulgarian host cities

The announcement of the host city for the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 has been delayed, with Bulgaria's national broadcaster BNT confirming that the selection process is still ongoing.

The contest remains a two-city race between Sofia and Burgas, which were shortlisted earlier this month after an initial assessment of bids from four Bulgarian cities.

In a statement, BNT said the international evaluation working group is continuing to assess both bids before a final decision is made.

"The evaluation process has reached its final stage, but additional time is required to complete the comprehensive assessment of the candidate cities," the broadcaster said.

No revised date has been announced for when the host city will be revealed.

Sofia and Burgas remain in contention

Sofia, Bulgaria's capital, and the Black Sea city of Burgas were confirmed as the final two contenders on 13 July after Plovdiv and Varna were eliminated from the bidding process.

Both cities have been working with BNT and the European Broadcasting Union to demonstrate they can meet the contest's hosting requirements, including arena capacity, accommodation, transport infrastructure, security and fan facilities.

Sofia is the logistical heavyweight. Its bid is built around Arena 8888 Sofia, Bulgaria's largest indoor venue, with a concert capacity of 18,000.

It's also far easier to reach. Sofia Airport has year-round connections to major European and Middle Eastern hubs, meaning Australian fans could typically get there with a single connection. Though they may need two stops.

Burgas is offering a different vision.

Its bid centres on the newer Arena Burgas, which holds 15,000 for concerts and opened in 2023.

The Black Sea city is hoping a coastal setting will give Eurovision a different feel. But for Australian fans, it would mean a minimum of two stops, with no direct transfer flights. This may mean going through the border at a European city, then boarding a flight to Burgas. Many low cost airlines and airports fly to that seaside city.

Host city still expected soon

Although the announcement has been postponed, BNT indicated the process is nearing its conclusion, with the working group now focused on selecting the strongest proposal.

Once chosen, the host city will begin detailed planning with BNT and the EBU ahead of Eurovision 2027.

Bulgaria will host the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time, with the winning city expected to welcome thousands of fans, media and delegations from across Europe and beyond.
