Basel announced as the 2025 Eurovision host city

The European Broadcasting Union and Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR have announced the host city for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 is Basel.

Basel will host the contest in Switzerland next year as announced on the Youtube channel for eurovision.tv.

The dates are: 13, 15 and 17 May 2025 for the Grand Final and the Contest will be held in St.Jakobshalle.

Martin Österdahl, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest said:

''The EBU is thrilled that Basel has been selected as the Host City for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. The Contest was born in Switzerland in Lugano back in 1956 and it’s great to be bringing it back to its birthplace almost 70 years later."
"Basel's strategic location at the crossroads of Europe makes it the ideal setting for an event that celebrates the power of music to connect people across borders."

The Road to Basel

Switzerland earned the right to host next year's contest after Nemo won in May with their song 'The Code'. Nemo became the first person to win for Switzerland since Celine Dion's iconic win back in 1988.

Regarding Basel's bid, they meant business and were hungry to host the Contest, releasing a video.

Switzerland has hosted the Eurovision Song Contest on two previous occasions - in Lausanne in 1989 and Lugano in 1956.

The other city in the running for host city was Geneva. Back in June, Aussievision reported there were four, possibly five cities that had expressed interest in hosting.

Where is Basel?

Basel is Switzerland's third largest city and is located in the country's north and in the German-speaking region.

The city is pretty much on the border of where Switzerland, France and Germany meet each other, and because of this, the city is considered an international rail hub.

As well as having good international rail connections, Basel also has the largest network of trams in Switzerland.

Due to its proximity to Zurich, it only takes just over an hour on the train, which makes staying in Zurich an attraction accommodation option. There are approximately 10,000 hotel rooms in Basel and the city also has its own international airport.
