Azerbaijan reveals their Eurovision entry

Samira Efendi’s song ‘Cleopatra’ has just been revealed to be the entry that will represent Azerbaijan at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam, with its music video having been uploaded to the official Eurovision Song Contest YouTube account just moments ago!

This is Efendi’s 5th attempt at representing Azerbaijan at Eurovision, and this time, she was successful! Samira is 28 years old and has appeared in many popular television singing competitions such as Yeni Ulduz (2009), Böyük Səhnə (2014), and The Voice of Azerbaijan in 2015-2016, where she came third. Eurovision is not the only time Efendi has represented Azerbaijan on an international stage - in 2017, she represented her home country in the Silk Way Star competition in Almaty, Kazakhstan, finishing in third place, and in 2019, she returned to Kazakhstan to participate in the Voice of Nur-Sultan festival.

‘Cleopatra’ is an ode to female empowerment, and sonically, it is filled to the brim with traditional instruments. The lyrics speak of the parallels between the singer’s story and the life of the titular Egyptian ruler.
