Major changes are taking place behind the scenes at Eurovision Asia, with reported budget cuts and changes to the production team just weeks before the inaugural contest in Bangkok.

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reports that the competition's original budget of approximately US$4.5 million has been reduced by US$1 million, representing a cut of almost 25%.

According to the publication, much of the international production team originally contracted to work on the contest will no longer be travelling to Thailand.

Instead, the event will rely on an experienced local Thai production team, with changes reportedly affecting staging, lighting, sound, graphics and other technical elements.

Aftonbladet reports that the decision has been driven by financial considerations, including the costs of transporting and accommodating international production personnel.

What does this mean for Eurovision Asia?

The changes represent a significant shift in how the inaugural contest will be delivered, although the involvement of local production teams has always been part of Eurovision Asia's wider vision.

In its reporting, Aftonbladet raised concerns about the financial situation behind the competition, including claims from an unnamed insider questioning whether the event would even happen.

However, there has been no indication suggesting Eurovision Asia will be cancelled or postponed.

Eurovision director Martin Green responded to Aftonbladet, emphasising the experience of the Thai production team and expressing confidence in the event.

"Asia has a very strong tradition of hosting major events and Eurovision Asia producers Voxovation are proud to be working with a large and experienced local team," Martin said.

"We feel confident that the budget matches the level of ambition for the first Asian competition and we look forward to its continued growth."

The production changes also follow the departure of Peter Settman, who was previously CEO of Eurovision Asia production company Voxovation.

Eurovision Asia still scheduled for November

Despite the reported financial concerns and changes behind the scenes, Eurovision Asia remains scheduled to take place in Bangkok on Saturday 14 November.

Eleven countries are preparing to compete in the inaugural edition, with national selections having taken place across Asia in recent months.

For fans who have already purchased tickets, booked flights and made travel arrangements, no changes to the event's schedule have been announced.
