Aussievision team ranking of OGAE Second Chance 2024 contest

This contest sees OGAE fan clubs send an entry that competed in their country's Eurovision national selection, but didn't win and represent them at Eurovision. Hence, the "second chance" nature of the contest.

We at the Aussievision team have decided to rank the 16 entries in this year's OGAE second chance contest.

Ten Aussievision contributors awarded points to their ten favourite songs in the same manner as the current Eurovision voting system (1st - 12 points, 2nd - 10 points, 3rd - 8 points, then all the way down to 10th - 1 point). Here are the results in ascending order:

16th to 11th

16. Croatia: MARCELA - Gasoline - 4 points

15. Ukraine: Ziferblat – Place I Call Home - 7 points

14. Lithuania: Shower – Impossible - 14 points

"This is very much my kind of music, underrated and touching. Maybe a bit too esoteric for Eurovision but perfect for my playlists." ~ Saskia

13. San Marino (OGAE Rest of the World): Loredana – Pazza - 16 points

12. Denmark: Basim – Johnny - 20 points

"This would've ended Denmark's heartbreak and qualified to the Grand Final. Its messaging resonates the millennial vibe of Eurovision, better than Cliche Love Song, by providing more tributes to a friend." ~ John Christian

11. Portugal: João Borsh – …Pelas costuras - 21 points

And now for the top ten ...

10. Serbia: Konstrakta – Novo, bolje - 26 points

Highs: 7 points from Craig, 6 points from Fleur, 5 points from John Christian

Lows: 0 points from Saskia, Dale and Emma

9. Malta: ERBA’ – Sirena - 33 points

Highs: 8 points from Emma, 7 points from John Christian, 6 points from Dale

Lows: 0 points: Saskia, Jamie and Sam

8. Estonia: Estonia: OLLIE – My Friend - 44 points

Highs: 12 points from John Christian, 8 points from Jamie, 7 points from Fleur

Lows: 0 points from Dale, Liv and Craig

"This should've been landed straight into the top 10, in my opinion. Its rawness and its 2000s emo rock flair really stands out." ~ John Christian

7. Finland: Sara Siipola – Paskana - 45 points

Highs: 8 points from Craig and Liv, 7 points from Sam

Lows: 0 points from John Christian, 2 points from Jamie and Steven

6. Sweden: Jacqline – Effortless - 47 points

Highs: 10 points from Dale, 7 points from Steven

Lows: 0 points from John Christian and Fleur, 3 points from Liv

"Now this is pop music. A great track that sounds like it could come from a modern-day superstar. It was nice to see a Melfest song that didn't sound so Melfest.... perhaps that's why it didn't do as well. 9th place? Call the police indeed." ~ Dale

5. Czechia: MYDY – Red Flag Parade - 48 points

Highs: 8 points from Sam and Dale, 7 points from Emma and Jamie

Lows: 2 points from Craig and Saskia, 3 points from Steven and Fleur

"This was the first big boilover of the national final season, with a result that left me gobsmacked. This performance was full of energy and the lead singer absolutely rocked the stage. Was it pitch perfect? No, but a heck of a lot better than the vocals of all the other acts. I love the Seven Nation Army feel to this song, and think Czechia would have qualified to the Eurovision final with this entry." ~ Sam

4. Germany: Ryk – Oh Boy - 50 points

Highs: 12 points from Craig and Saskia, 10 points from Fleur

Lows: 0 points from Jamie, Liv and John Christian

"I've been through enough national final seasons now that I usually don't get attached to songs anymore... but this one missing out hurt. Lyrically wonderful, instrumentally haunting and beautiful, and with Ryk's amazing voice soaring above it all. I still love this and would love to see Ryk get a shot at ESC one of these years." ~ Craig

"Gorgeous song, novel and haunting intrumentation matched with a fantastic vocal. Probably the biggest shock non-winner of the national final season for me." ~ Saskia

"This was my favourite to win Eurovision, but oh well. I still enjoy it and think it's one of the best German songs that I have heard in a long time." ~ Fleur

3. Norway: KEiiNO – Damdiggida - 51 points

Highs: 12 points from Jamie, 10 points from Liv, 8 points from John Christian

Lows: 0 points from Fleur and Steven, 1 point from Saskia

"A very catchy pop song that sticks in your head. KEiiNO were unlucky not to win MGP and I am sure they would have received a large televote at Eurovision, even though in my opinion this song is not as good as their other MGP entries Spirit in the Sky or Monument." ~ Jamie

"When I tell you I still listen to this non-stop and do a boppy little dance to go along with it....you can't help but feel happy hearing Damdiggida. Bonus points for having a heart inspired rhythm in the chorus." ~ Liv

2. Spain: Angy Fernandez – Sé quien soy - 55 points

Highs: 12 points from Emma and Sam, 10 points from Steven

Lows: 0 points from Fleur, Craig and Jamie

"This song grew on me so much from my first listen of the studio version to the live performance we saw at Benidorm Fest. Angy was living this song through every moment of her performance and I think it would have made a great Spanish Eurovision entry." ~ Emma

"Pop-rock done well by a likeable artist. Spain opted for a message over the better song in its NF selection, IMHO." ~ Steven

"Ahhh Angy, totally robbed in Benidorm for me! This was full of emotions, full of passion, artsy, ballsy, and an absolute earworm. This is the perfect rock song for me, and would have been amazing to see this live at Eurovision." ~ Sam

1. Italy: Annalisa – Sinceramente - 101 points

Highs: 12 points from Liv, Dale, Fleur and Steven, 10 points from Craig, Jamie, Emma and Sam

Lows: 5 points from John Christian

"This song gets my douze points purely because it has been living rent free in my head since San Remo. This is a tune. I love it." ~ Fleur

"A perfect slice of Italian dark pop with catchy hooks galore. Sinceramente, quando will Italy next win? With entries, aces and performances like this, presto!" ~ Steven

"This would have been a cracking Italian entry with its fast-paced catchy chorus and may have done even better than Angelina Mango. I still love listening to it today." ~ Emma

"Sinceramente was unlucky to have not won Sanremo. Annalisa has a beautiful amazing voice and if she had been selected, would have come close to winning Eurovision for Italy." ~ Jamie

"Sanremo was really incredibly strong this year, and this one still sticks with me even months later. Such an incredibly well-put-together pop tune and with Annalisa pulling it together as a charismatic leading lady. Please, please, please let her get her Sanremo flowers one of these years!" ~ Craig

"Annalisa was incredibly unlucky not to take the win at Sanremo this year. An incredible performance, a catchy AF song, this would have done very well if it had the chance to go to Eurovision. I adore it!" ~ Dale

"I know it my heart of hearts that Annalisa will win Sanremo one day - she is such a quality artist with so much presence when she performs. Sinceramente is instantly catchy, Italian and showcases her world class vocals splendidly." ~ Liv

So a dominant win for Italy's Annalisa, who at one stage was the favourite to win Sanremo this year. Will she take out the OGAE Second chance contest crown instead? We will keep you updated.
