September 21 is Armenia Independence Day, which has been celebrated since 1991 when Armenia became a republic after refusing to sign the USSR New Union Treaty, thus abolishing the Armenian SSR and proclaiming independence after a referendum. Levon Ter-Petrosyan became the first president of Armenia when he was elected and took office in November.
Armenia was the first country from the Caucasus region to make their debut at the Eurovision Song Contest when Andre placed 8th in 2006.
They have an impressive qualification record of 14 out of 17 finals, only missing out in 2011, 2018 and 2019.
Armenia have reached the Top 10 on eight occasions with their best result of two fourth places, first with Sirusho with Qélé, Qélé in 2008 and Aram MP3 in 2014 with Not Alone.
Seven entries from the Caucasus nation have Armenian lyrics and this is what the Aussievion team have focused on for Armenia Independence Day this year. Nine members of the team have ranked their favourites awarding 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2 points to their top songs.
So which Armenian Armenian song is our favourite?
7. Hayko - Anytime You Need (8th place in 2007): 10 points
Highs: 4 points from Joel. 2 points from Liv, Kyriakos and Dale.
Lows: 0 points from Fleur, Srdjan, Emma, Sam and Hayley.
6. Sevak Khanagyan - Qami (15th place in SF1 2018): 40 points
Highs: 8 points from Dale and Joel. 6 points from Kyriakos.
Lows: 2 points from Fleur, Srdjan and Emma.
"It may take a while to get going and it's a little repetitive, but when it eventually gets going Sevak really belts it out. A personal favourite from 2018 for me." ~ Dale
5. Brunette - Future Lover (14th place in 2023): 44 points
Highs: 12 points from Srdjan. 8 points from Liv and Hayley.
Lows: 2 points from Sam. 0 points from Kyriakos and Dale.
"Love absolutely everything about this song, from the melody, to the message of the song. And RnB is an unrepresented genre at Eurovision, let alone female rap. The way English is blended with Armenian language was also done really well." ~ Srdjan
4. Parg - Survivor (20th place in 2025): 56 points
Highs: 12 points from Joel. 10 points from Emma.
Lows: 4 points from Kyriakos and Dale. 0 points from Liv.
"Look, I’m going to lean heavily into the ‘vision’ part of Euro-vision and admit that a shirtless Parg gets my 12 points mostly because he’s easy on the eye. Still pumps out a decent tune though." ~ Joel
"Not my favourite song but respect to Parg whose gutsy performance took 'Survivor' to the Grand Final from certain non-qualifier before rehearsals began." ~ Emma
"I admit that I never rated this until we saw him perform this at Basel- I thought it was a definite NQ. The song itself is satisfactory but his performance and staging was great. He and his team certainly understood the brief." ~ Fleur
3. Ladaniva - Jako (8th place in 2024): 72 points
Highs: 12 points from Emma and Hayley. 10 points from Sam and Dale.
Lows: 4 points from Srdjan. 2 points from Joel.
"My all time favourite Armenian entry - there was so much to like about the studio version of this and everything translated to the live performance beautifully. LADANIVA made a folk performance look and sound cool and the audience were eating it up." ` Emma
"This song is absolute joy! Fun on stage - the whole stadium lit up when Ladavina performed. God knows what the lyrics are about, but I am here for it!" ~ Hayley
"This song is so catchy and this couple is incredibly charismatic. They look so cute together! Well deserved top 10 for Armenia that year." ~ Sam
"Native language, trumpets and chaotic energy is my jam so this was always going to score well. Could do with less crazy eyes though." ~ Dale
2. Inga and Anush - Jan Jan (10th place in 2009): 78 points
Highs: 12 points from Liv and Sam. 10 points from Fleur, Srdjan, Kyriakos and Hayley.
Lows: 6 points from Dale. 0 points from Joel.
"What an absolute Eurovision classic from one of the strongest contests of all time! It's hypnotic, catchy and oh so iconic. I could scream the chorus to Jan Jan at 3am for the rest of my life." ~ Liv
"Måns Zelmerlöw and I don’t have much in common. However one thing we do share is a love of this entry! (It’s his favourite Eurovision song). A great celebration of Armenian folk music to a pop beat. I absolutely love the traditional dresses and the movement of the long sleeves as the dancers move about. The green lasers make me chuckle. Overall an eclectic and excellent entry!" ~ Sam
"I love this, it's such an earworm. I don't get tired of listening to this. Let's be honest, it should be obligatory for every Eurovision party." ~ Fleur
"Ethnic, catchy and a bop. What's not to love?" ~ Srdjan
"This is so catchy! Love the performance and the chorus!" ~ Kyriakos
"This is an absolute classic!" ~ Hayley
1. Sirusho - Qélé, Qélé (4th place in 2008): 78 points
Highs: 12 points from Fleur, Kyriakos and Dale. 10 points from Liv and Joel.
Lows: 6 points from Srdjan and Emma. 2 points from Hayley.
N.B. Despite receiving the same amount of points Armenia's 2008 entry was ranked higher as all contributors voted for it, as opposed to their 2009 entry where one contributor did not vote for it. Armenia's 2008 entry also received more sets of 12 points.
"Easily my favourite. I don't think that this has ever left my playlist. It still slaps 17 years later. Her top 5 result was certainly most deserved." ~ Fleur
"This is my all time favourite Armenian entry!! I gave been obsessed with this for all 17 years since I first saw it at Eurovision. Top tier performance!!" ~ Kyriakos
"There's a reason this is still played at EuroClub today, it's an absolute 2000s banger! It's simple, effective and got the nation its best ever result." ~ Dale
"It's a bit "go girl, give us nothing" Armenia style but I'll take it any day.~ Liv
"I really enjoy the traditional musical influences in this one, it’s a sound we haven’t heard much on the stage in recent years and I think the competition is richer when it includes songs like this." ~ Joel
