Alicja Szemplińska will represent Poland at Eurovision 2020

The Final of Telewizja Polska’s (TVP) Szansa Na Sukces has been run and won with Alicja Szemplińska winning the ticket to Rotterdam in May. The national final included the three winners from the semi final, choosing not to go ahead with the optional wildcard for a fourth act. The contestants all sang Eurovision songs in the first round- Kasia Dereń with 'Satellite', Alicja Szemplińska with 'Euphoria' and Albert Černý with 'Fairytale'. Earlier in the week Albert Černý, who competed for Czech Republic in 2019, announced that he was performing ‘Lucy’ with his Lake Malawi bandmates- Jeroným Šubrt and Antonín Hrabal. The song was written by Eurovision alumni Cesár Sampson, JOWST and Lasse Piirainen (of Norma John). ‘Lucy’ was inspired by 2019 Eurovision host, Lucy Ayoub and a cardboard cutout of her that the band found of her at the Tel Aviv press centre. Kasia Dereń performed an English version of her song ‘Ufaj Mi’ (Count on Me), a song which she co-wrote with Piotr Walcki, Marcin Januszkiewicz and Mateusz Krautwurs. All are songwriters which she has worked with before. Kasia was a finalist in The Voice Poland and a backing vocalist for Gromee and Luka Meijer at Eurovision 2018. 17-year-old Alicja Szemplińska is the most recent winner of The Voice Poland. Previously she was a finalist on TVP2’s talent show ‘Hit, Hit, Hurray!’, her prize been singing lessons with Seth Riggs- a vocal coach that worked with Michael Jackson. Her song 'Empires' was written by Patryk Kumór, Dominic Buczkowski-Wojtaszek and Eurovision songwriting doyen, Laurell Barker.

The night belonged to Alicja. She won both the jury and public votes. Albert finished in second place, while Kasia placed third.
