Overnight, Estonian broadcaster ERR hosted the final of Eesti Laul, its longtime national selection show for Eurovision. Live from the capital Tallinn, ten acts battled it out and we have a winner!
5MIINUST x Puuluup won the competition with "(nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi" and will represent Estonia at Eurovision 2024 in Malmo in May. They won the three-song Superfinal, beating out OLLIE and Nele-Lils Vaiksoo in second and third place respectively.
The song title translates to "(we) don't know anything about (these) drugs".
The voting took place over two rounds; firstly, a 50% public vote and 50% international jury vote took place. The jury included former Estonian Eurovision representative Anna Sahlene, William Lee Adams, the founder of popular Eurovision fan site Wiwibloggs, and even an Australian, Liam Clark, who has worked in international relations and has worked with the Estonian delegation at Eurovision previously.
The jury results were as follows:
Who are 5MIINUST x Puuluup?
5MIINUST were formed in 2016 and are made up of five members each with an interesting nickname: Karl Kivastik aka North Korea, Kristjan Jakobson aka Estoni Kohver, Mihkel Tamm aka Day Dog, Pavel Botšarov aka Gameboy Tetris and Priit Tomson aka Lancelot. They have quickly become a mainstay in the Estonian music industry, winning several awards including the Estonian Music Award's (EMA) Artist of the Year in 2020.
They are teaming up with Puuluup, a folk duo formed in 2014 comprised of musicians Ramo Teder and Marko Veisson. According to its website, Puuluup "oscillates on the border of tradition and modern music styles, flirting with world music, underground and pop". They are notable for using the traditional instrument hiiu kannel, a harp-like bowed instrument.
Hosted by Grete Kuld and Tõnis Niinemets, this year's Eesti Laul was a spectacular show, featuring a special cover of Estonia's first Eurovision song as a celebration of its 30-year Eurovision anniversary, as well as a performance by Estonian Eurovision 2023 8th place getter Alika and Eesti Laul 2023 Superfinalist Bedwetters.
5MIINUST x Puuluup will compete for Estonia in the second half of the second-semi final of Eurovision 2024 in Malmö, Sweden.
