The 2025 Formula 1 season is back on home soil and about to kick off in Melbourne, Australia!
At first glance, Eurovision Song Contest and Formula 1 seem like worlds apart. One is a musical spectacle where nations from across Europe (and beyond) showcase their musical talents, while the other is a high-octane global sport focused on speed, precision, and engineering excellence.
Surely, they couldn't have much in common? Despite the superficial differences, spend more than a few minutes in the online Eurovision community, and you'll realise the large crossover of Eurovision and F1 fans!
This year, the Eurovision National Final season conveniently ended a week before F1 recommenced. Who do I need to thank for this brilliant timing?
These two cultural phenomena share some surprising and iconic connections - let's take a look:
1. Charles Leclerc is a huge fan of Måneskin

Current Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc was spotted at a Måneskin concert ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix back in 2022 where he took photos with the band. The Montegasque also follows all of the members on Instagram. Leclerc is an avid musician himself, with many original piano pieces uploaded to Spotify.
Damiano David was invited as a guest of Ferrari to Italian Grand Prix 2023, giving us these iconic and unforgettable moments:

But it doesn't it there - this viral photo of Damiano on a yacht after the race wearing Charles' signed and gifted helmet sent both F1 and Eurovision fans into a frenzy.
2. Windows95man released a single named after Mika Häkkinen
Finland has no shortage of iconic F1 drivers and Eurovision entrants. Last year's representative Windows95man released a remix in January of Formula 06 (Hockenheim Club Mix) with samples of Finnish commentary about the legendary Mika Häkkinen, complete with live engine sounds. The former Lotus and McLaren driver won two World Drivers' Championships in 1998 and 1999.
3. Joost is a big fan of Max Verstappen
The flying Dutchman Max Verstappen is fresh off the back of his fourth consecutive World Drivers' Championship victory with Red Bull Racing in 2024. Another notable Dutch character last year was Joost who represented The Netherlands at Eurovision with Europapa.
In the music video for Europapa, a man who looks suspiciously similar to Verstappen is seen DJing toward the climax of the song. The outfit colouring is reminiscent of the Red Bull racing attire, which would be protected by copyright - could this have been a nod to the famous race driver?

Joost is a fan of the driver, expressing on a radio interview:
"In my head, I also draw lots of comparisons [of myself] to Max Verstappen. I don't know him personally, yet. But Max, if you're listening to this: let's link!"
4. Fernando Alonso watches Eurovision
Although Fernando Alonso's Twitter account has been devoid of Eurovision content in recent years, the Spaniard and current Aston Martin driver did his best to promote the Spanish Eurovision 2013 representatives ESDM with Contigo hasta el final online, urging his millions of followers to vote for the entry.
These tweets also resulted in some amusing banter between Fernando and Finnish driver Heikki Kovalainen:

Unfortunately, Fernando's efforts didn't go far, with the song placing 25th in the final with just 8 points. On a more successful note, Fernando holds both 2005 and 2006 World Drivers' Championships.
5. F1 themselves ponder if Sebastian Vettel could win Eurovision?
On a Facebook post, the official F1 page shared a compilation of some of Sebastian Vettel's "best" vocal moments on team radio with the caption:
"First gig for Sebastian Vettel when he retires from F1? Sing Germany to victory at the Eurovision Song Contest? Sound on... or earplugs in"
The post was published on 13 May 2018, a day after the Eurovision Grand Final. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) Seb has never threatened us with a Eurovision vocal performance yet.
The 2018 season marked a narrow defeat for the German driver, who placed 2nd in the World Drivers' Championship with Ferrari. In parallel, against all odds Germany placed 4th at Eurovision with Michael Schulte's You Let Me Walk Alone, close but yet so far from the victory.
6. Charles Leclerc is ready to represent Monaco at Eurovision
Eurovision media site Eurovoix reported on X (formally known as Twitter) Monaco was eligible to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. This was exciting news as Monaco hasn't competed at the contest since 2006 with Séverine Ferrer, who failed to qualify for the final.
Who could represent the micronation? Charles Leclerc reckons he's up for the job!
Unfortunately, Monaco didn't compete at Eurovision 2024 and has not submitted an entry for this year's contest!
7. Duncan Laurence dazzles at Dutch Grand Prix 2024
The Netherlands doesn't just dominate on track, but also in recent years at Eurovision! Duncan Laurence took out the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with the anthemic Arcade. The song has become one of the most successful winning entries of all time with 1.3 billion streams on Spotify alone.
He was invited to sing the Dutch national anthem at the recent Dutch Grand Prix 2024. To the delight of fans, they transplanted Duncan's piano to the track and made sure to include a shot of countryman Max Verstappen overseeing the performance.

8. Alfa Romeo's "Eurovision-esque" car reveal of 2021

Alfa Romeo took a page out of the Eurovision book during their 2021 car reveal. F1 writer Lawrence Barretto described the launch as:
"Two grand pianos, a couple of dancers and Eurovision-esque presentation. Alfa Romeo certainly didn’t hold back with their 2021 car launch, as they unveiled the C41 in an old-school short and snappy event in Warsaw, Poland."
Both F1 and Eurovision love a spectacle, it was only a matter of time before they crossed paths!
9. Efendi performed at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2018

The national anthem performance is a traditional part of any F1 weekend and in 2018, well before her Eurovision debut, Efendi got the call. The Azerbaijani singer is better known for competing at Eurovision 2020 and 2021 with the entries Cleopatra and Mata Hari.
It'll never not be amusing seeing F1 drivers "going through the motions" on an F1 weekend. Especially if it is Carlos Sainz, Estaban Ocon, Kevin Magnussen, Max Verstappen, Sebastian Vettel and Pierre Gasly looking completely bored out of their minds whilst a future Eurovision artist gives it their all.
10. Sam Ryder wows at British Grand Prix 2022
Another Eurovision artist to get their moment on the global stage twice in a year! Sam Ryder led the United Kingdom to Eurovision glory, placing second at Eurovision 2022 with the iconic entry Space Man. Just two months later, he was invited to sing the national anthem at the British Grand Prix.
Space Man is now the highest scoring British Eurovision entry of all time with 466 points. His performance at Silverstone featured his fabulous electric guitar skills and was overseen by fellow countrymen George Russell, Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton.
