Possibly the news no one really saw coming, Romania is officially returning to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2026, with broadcaster TVR confirming the country’s comeback after a two-year break.

It is not yet known what approach the broadcaster will use in its selection for the 2026 entry. Further details on the selection format will be announced in the coming months. Whatever the choice, it seems that TVR are certainly ready for a fresh start and are keen to tap into the Romanian music industry.

TVR’s President-Director General, Dan-Cristian Turturică, is quoted as saying:

"We proposed Romania’s return to the Eurovision Song Contest because, during the two years of absence, we had the time to better understand what did not work in the relationship between TVR, the music industry and creators.

"We learned what we must change on our side to have a more competitive selection process and a show that matches the scale of the contest, so we can consistently improve the quality of our presence at Eurovision.

"It will make sense to return with a participation in Eurovision when the relationship between Romanian Television and music producers … will be reset."

"With today’s decision, TVR reaffirms its commitment to supporting Romanian artists, harnessing the creative potential of our music industry, and promoting Romania on one of the world’s most prestigious stages."

Romania last competed in 2023 and has used its time away to reassess its Eurovision strategy, strengthen ties with the local music industry and plan for a more competitive return.

The country has delivered many memorable moments over the years — including two third-place finishes, so fans will be keen to see what direction Romania takes as it gears up for Vienna 2026.

Romania who were once a powerhouse nation, seem keen to make amends and come back with a bang!
