The launch of Eurovision Song Contest Asia has reignited discussion about whether New Zealand could one day join the Eurovision family.

New reporting from New Zealand suggests broadcaster TVNZ has assessed the possibility of securing Eurovision broadcast rights, although participation in either the Eurovision Song Contest or Eurovision Asia is not currently being pursued.

According to reporting from New Zealand newspaper The Post, Eurovision Asia's arrival has prompted renewed interest in how New Zealand fits into the wider Eurovision landscape.

Eurovoix reports that TVNZ has assessed broadcasting both the Eurovision Song Contest and Eurovision Asia, but has not explored entering either competition.

Why New Zealand can't currently compete in Eurovision

While New Zealand's public broadcaster TVNZ is an associate member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), participation in the Eurovision Song Contest would require an invitation from the contest's Steering Group.

Australia's involvement came after decades of broadcasting the event through SBS, eventually leading to a special invitation to compete in 2015 before becoming an ongoing participant.

Unlike SBS, TVNZ does not have a long-standing history of broadcasting Eurovision.

The EBU has previously indicated there were no plans to invite New Zealand to compete in Eurovision.

Eurovision Asia sparks the conversation

The creation of Eurovision Song Contest Asia may present a more realistic pathway for New Zealand involvement in a Eurovision-branded event.

The inaugural Eurovision Asia contest will take place in Bangkok in November 2026 and currently features broadcasters from across Asia, including Thailand, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.

While Australia will not participate in the inaugural edition, SBS previously said it would be watching the development of the contest with interest.

As an Asia-Pacific nation and EBU associate member, New Zealand would appear to fit more naturally within Eurovision Asia than the main European contest, although no broadcaster has signalled plans to participate at this stage.

Could New Zealand become Eurovision's next Oceania nation?

For now, any New Zealand involvement remains speculative.

However, the fact TVNZ has reportedly assessed Eurovision broadcast rights suggests the contest is at least on the broadcaster's radar.

This post really grabbed my attention after scrolling through so much online content. It's fascinating how my own understanding of New Zealand has completely transformed over the past year; it's now a significant focus in my work. I especially appreciated the insights here, and it got me thinking about how technology might have shaped the country's development and its global presence. A section dedicated to myth-busting about New Zealand would be incredibly useful for readers like me who are still learning https://www.ausbanking.org.au/ It's something I'd genuinely love to see addressed. This article is definitely going onto my permanent New Zealand reading list. I've already shared it with three friends who I know will appreciate it as much as I do.…
