Netherlands: Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper release their Eurovision 2023 song ‘Burning Daylight’

After being announced as Netherlands’ representatives back in November 2022, Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper have revealed their song for Eurovision 2023, ‘Burning Daylight’.

The song was revealed on the official Eurovision Song Contest YouTube channel and is available on all major streaming platforms. The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS’ official Instagram account had previously announced the song reveal on 22 February, including teasers showcasing the underlying message behind the song.

‘Burning Daylight’ was unanimously chosen by the internal selection committee, which included AVROTROS general director Eric van Stade and Eurovision 2021 presenter Jan Smit.

Van Stade, on behalf of the internal selection committee, said, “the selection committee were, without exception, very positive about their song, in which their voices work together beautifully.”

Who are Mia and Dion?

Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper were originally paired by contributing songwriters Duncan Laurence (Eurovision 2019 winner) and Jordan Garfield in 2020. The two did not know each other prior to their formation, but felt an immediate “click” when they realised their musical styles and voices matched up well.

Mia Nicolai, originally from Amsterdam, lived in Melbourne for a period of time before settling in Los Angeles. Mia made her solo debut in 2020 with the track ‘Set Me Free’, later finding more airplay with her follow-up single ‘Mutual Needs’.

Dion Cooper signed to Duncan Laurence’s label Yellow Field Publishing in August 2021, and was later announced as Laurence’s support act for his 2021 Netherlands tour. Dion made his solo debut in 2020 with the track ‘Simple’, later finding success with his 2021 single ‘Cold’ off his EP ‘Too Young Too Dumb’.

Netherlands’ Mia and Dion will perform in the second half of the first semifinal on 9 May 2023.
