Finnish representatives Linda Lampenius and Pete Parkkonen have confirmed the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has granted their request to play the violin live during the performance of their entry Liekinheitin at Eurovision 2026.
It was confirmed on Linda Lampenius and Pete Parkkonen's Instagram the live violin was given the green light today:
"After countless rehearsals, trials and discussions we are proud to announce that Linda Lampenius is allowed to and will play violin-led parts live on the Eurovision stage."
Since the 1999 edition of the Contest, it has been prohibited to use live instruments during performances, ruling all instruments must be pre-recorded. This coincided with the removal of the live orchestra.
This year's Finnish entry Liekinheitin features a significant amount of violin solo by Linda Lampenius, and the performance is certainly stronger for it. The delegation submitted a request to the EBU, requesting an exemption to the rule prior to rehearsals.
"It brings us immerse joy that her voice will be heard through her violin on the biggest night in music."
This isn't the first time in recent history a live instrument was heard on the Eurovision stage. Just last year, Italian entrant Lucio Corsi featured a harmonica solo during his performance of Volevo essere un duro. He claimed fifth place and perhaps opened the door once again to live instruments at Eurovision again...
