Finland: Artists announced for 'UMK 2022'




Finland’s broadcaster Yle have announced the seven artists taking part in their national final Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK) for 2022.


The full artist line-up including song titles:

  • Cyan Kicks - 'Hurricane'

  • Bess - 'Ram pam pam'

  • The Rasmus - 'Jezebel'

  • Younghearted - 'Sun numero'

  • Olivera - 'Thank God I'm an Atheist'

  • Tommi Läntinen - 'Eläma kantaa mua'

  • Isaac Sene - 'Kuuma jäbä'

Each artist’s song will be individually released every day starting on January 13.




Cyan Kicks are described as the most "rock" out of the UMK line up this year. The band formed in 2016 and have released two albums. Their musical style is unique modern rock with a fusion of styles. Their UMK entry 'Hurricane' will be a mixture of rock and electronic styles.






Bess is a pop artist who released her debut album 'BESS' in 2019. It went on to be streamed over 20 million times. The most popular single from the album 'Tempo' went platinum in Finland. Expect her entry 'Ram pam pam' to showcase her electronic pop and house music style.



The Rasmus may be a familiar name to some. The Finish band formed back in 1994. The band have have sold over 5 million albums world wide and had a hit single 'In the Shadows' back in 2003. The song topped the chart in Finland, Germany, Hungary and New Zealand. The band's national final entry 'Jezebel' is a song for strong, independent women, who blaze their own trail.


Younghearted is a pop group who consists of high school friends who formed the band in 2015. They have released two albums. Their debut 'Nuorisydän' released in 2016 went platinum in Finland. Younghearted's follow up album 'Vapaa' scored an Emma Gala Music Award nomination for Band of the Year. Their UMK entry 'Sun numero' sees the band take a new direction in their music opting for a 'soft rock'n'roll' sound.



Katriina Ullakko aka Olivera is an up and coming singer with songs that have accumulated millions of streams on Spotify. The indie-pop artist has so far released four EP's. Her biggest song 'No more' has over 10 million streams. She has also written music for Tiësto. Her UMK entry 'Thank God I'm an Atheist' explores death and the possibility of eternal life.



Tommi's music career spans 40 years. He has performed in many groups and collaborated with various artists. In 1994 he launched his solo career and scored many hits including 'Via Dolorosa' and 'Kevät ja minä'. In February he will be releasing his first album in 10 years, 'Eläma kantaa mua', which is also the name of his UMK song. His song is written by the band Haloo Helsinki.



Isaac Sene is a young singer-songwriter who makes music without boundaries, blending genres, mixing real-life narratives and imaginary stories. His most streamed song on Spotify is his 2020 release 'Bébé' with Vesta. Isaac's UMK entry 'Kuuma jäbä' was co-written by Isaac and Alvar Escartin.


UMK will take place on February 26 (the morning of February 27 Australian time). The winner will be decided by a mixed vote from the public and a jury.



Finland made their Eurovision debut in 1961. 45 years later they would go on to win the Contest when in 2006 Lordi took the trophy with ‘Hard Rock Hallelujah’. Finland have made 54 appearances at Eurovision and finished in the top 10 twelve times. Last year Blind Channel gave Finland their best result with 'Dark Side', a 6th place finish, since their win in 2006.
