Eurovision on Tour: The Australian report card

For transparency, Aussievision received a number of free press tickets to attend, but we were not official partners or affiliated with Eurovision on Tour in any way.

For one big week in November, Eurovision artists performed shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney for passionate Aussie fans.

But was it a complete success?

From our view, and through a survey of 72 fans who attended, we've come to some conclusions.

We look at what went well, what could be improved and what must never happen again.

What went well?

Artists

When surveyed, fans gave the artists a score of 4.63/5.00 and it's easy to understand why.

Those who came were a good mix of recent artists, iconic acts and those from decades past.

Ultimately there was something for everyone including big vocals, slick choreography, former winners, foreign language, conga lines and some novelty-ish acts.

The artists themselves showed so much passion for the show and an appreciation for the Australian fans.

They also did all the shows with jet lag (particularly Brisbane) but carried on through it all.

We loved them, they loved us, and they loved their time in Australia.

Fan comments on what they loved:

  • The artists were the best part of the tour. They all came with a positive attitude and came to entertain.

  • The artists were fantastic, they made it!

  • Getting to see some of my favourite Eurovision artists that I would have never had the chance to see otherwise

  • The mix of old and new artists.

  • I loved the selection of artists that were involved

  • Seeing artists I loved from previous Eurovision's. Such an awesome variety of songs and the crowd loving it.

  • Good selection of artists. I also liked that each act performed their own song(s) and one or more other well-loved - often classic - Eurovision entries.

  • The oldies! Linda Martin and Esther Hart are my homegirls. Who needs the 2020s when these divas were living it up on stage?

Fans

The energy and passion of Eurovision fans at each venue was palpable.

Whether it was giving our own Dami Im a standing ovation, singing along to Jalisses's Nel blu, dipinto di blu or doing the moves with The Roop, the crowd got FULLY into it all.

Not only were they passionate but they also turned up in Brisbane on a wet stormy Wednesday, still danced despite a seated venue in Melbourne, and forgot that they had work the next day for Sydney's Sunday show.

Many fans got to reconnect with each other as well.

Fan comments on what they loved:

  • It was such a positive vibe sharing the experience with the artists and fans.

  • The artists, and the Eurovision community

  • Getting to hang out with amazing Eurofan friends and see incredible artists in artists

  • The vibe of the crowd, it was like a party.

  • The atmosphere in the room and having some of my favourite artists.

Bringing "Eurovision" to those who've never been

Many fans have travelled to the Contest from Australia but far more haven't.

Eurovision on Tour didn't just roll out some artists to sing, they tried to bring a Eurovision experience as well.

The show started with a flag parade, they had hosts, there were postcards between each act and artists had dancers and backing screens.

This gave it a (very) mini-Euroivison vibe, just without the voting.

Fans enjoyed the hosting giving Senhit and Soraya 4.58/5.00 stars.

Even if they were a bit clunky at times (again a true Eurovision element), their energy and warmth came through.

The production was good without being amazing (fans gave it 4.31/5.00 stars) but it did the job for the venue and type of show it was.

Fan comments on what they loved:

  • The flag parade and the postcards were camp and cool!

  • Being able to see a variety of Eurovision stars, many are genuinely my favourites ever, without having to travel overseas. The privilege of being able to experience this is not lost on me.

  • Great graphics & dancers, inclusion of postcards.

  • The dancers were amazing and hilarious, they added heaps to the show. I also liked the “postcard” bits that mimicked the real show.

  • I also loved the little touches like the post cards and the flag parade, the covers etc. and Senhit was a fantastic host

  • Presentation and the lights into each country/artist was very fun and mini Eurovision.

What could be improved

The venues

The biggest issue many raised was having a seated venue for the Melbourne show.

We can understand why it was chosen but for a Eurovision show, it was an odd choice.

On the flip side, accessibility was an issue. For some at standing shows, they were placed far away and for those at the seated shows, people stood up in front of them to enjoy the atmosphere.

Additionally, there were multiple reports of rude staff in Melbourne and sound issues at the venues.

Overall, fans rated the venues 4.33/5.00 stars.

We'd agree that they were good and did suit most needs but improvements could be made to increase the Eurovision fan experience.

Fan comments on what could be improved:

  • I really didn’t like the Brisbane venue, The Tivoli being general admission - virtually standing only. As a person who is very short, there was very little vantage points where I could see over all in front of me. Everyone was trying to get the best position. And I was very disappointed the upstairs balconies weren’t open. I paid extra for early entry but there was little to no seating and we were not able to go upstairs.

  • Box office staff were a nightmare. This never should have been a seated event.

  • Sound at the Palais was terrible was really muffled.

  • A seated venue was very strange for this event

  •  production was very bad, I could barely hear the artists sometimes despite being very close to the stage

  • Sound at the venue

  • Box office staff at the Palais were very rude and unhelpful.

  • Everyone stood up so much. We were 5 rows from the front and hardly saw a thing. Why have it on a seated venue if everyone's going to stand. Hard with people with disabilities

  • The venue, it should be standing not seated

  • Palais Melbourne is an awful venue for this event due to it being a seated venue. We did all get up and dance but it was squished. The sound quality at the front was very poor. They need a better venue next year without seats.

  • Accessible venues

Meet and greet

Despite it being one of the things many fans enjoyed the most, a lot of people felt it was rushed and ultimately didn't offer value for money.

Many found communication was also quite poor around it.

Fan comments on what could be improved:

  • Meet and greet was a bit disorganised and very rushed.

  •  Meet & greet was also late. 20 minutes to get through everyone was very rushed. I’d do it again, without hesitation, but definitely could use improvement.

  • The fact you would charge $80 extra for meet and greet then tell us we need to be quick as ‘they are behind’ literally was a waste of time.

  • The lack of communication to people with m&g with regards to when we could get let into the actual venue.

  •  Not much information was given about the M&G.

  • I did the meet and greet and it felt incredibly rushed. Felt like we had about 20 seconds with each group of artists for a photo only, and no time for a quick conversation.

  • Meet and greet felt rushed

  • The Meet & Greet could be improved with professional photographers and a Eurovision on Tour background rather than the dodgy coloured painted walls.

What was poor and must change

False promises and trust

From the very start of Eurovision On Tour being announced earlier in the year, there were some issues.

They announced OGAE clubs would hold parties without consulting them. They then announced artists as part of the line-up who went on to social media to say they hadn't been booked. It was hard to understand who was behind it and what was involved.

Close to the tour dates, line-ups were announced on their social media accounts but didn't appear fully on their website nor did they appear on venue websites.

Even when the first show in Spain was about to kick off they falsely claimed Dami Im would be there when she was not appearing until London. Something she had to point out on her own social media.

Shows were then cancelled/postponed in Paris and Stockholm fuelling fears that the tour would not go ahead.

When the show did arrive Down Under it was missing two artists Carola and Rosa López. Although Rosa would be missed, Carola in particular was an artist many were most excited about seeing. Carola in the end, only did the Madrid show.

Having a Eurovision legend and winner not attend but still be promoted was misleading.

At Aussievision, we were trying to help build up the event but we had to go through the Instagram feeds of artists to actually know who had got on the plane.

Many reported to us that they didn't trust the event and chose not to buy tickets because of this.

What fans were disappointed with:

  • There were so many concerns beforehand that put people off. Not working with fan clubs, promoting artists who weren't going

  • Until the night of the show we were unsure who had actually travelled here

  • The uncertainty around which artists would attend and the non-appearance of a big artist billed as attending (Carola) who did not perform at any Australian venue

  • Carola and Rosa MIA.

  • One disappointment was that I was looking forward to seeing Carola. There was no mention of the fact that she wasn’t there and actually the hosts still kept saying “16” artists which confused me so I wasn’t sure if she was there or not.

  • The miscommunication and false advertising by the organising parties, particularly with regards to release dates for tickets and participating artists. It was also disappointing no responses were provided to submitted enquiries requesting clarification regarding the issues.

  • There is nothing more ridiculous than advertising artists then just providing no update when artists pulled out. Carola was the main reason I bought a ticket - then to find out on the day that she’s not there. It’s just ridiculous.

  • Lastly, Carola and Rosa were advertised in the line-up and ended up being no-shows. Be careful which artists you promote if they are not included in any particular portion of the tour!

  • Everything about it in the lead up seemed a mess.

Promotion and communication

Quite simply, the promotion was very poor and ultimately that came through crowds and ticket sales.

The crowds were good but could have easily attracted more punters.

The organisers didn't work well, or at all, with fan groups and fan media on the ground here in Australia.

They didn't use personalities that would resonate with the dedicated fans and the casual fans alike. Epic Sax guy was right there and his imagery or anything else to do with him (or other iconic acts) was not included. That is just one example of many missed opportunities.

The fact that tens of thousands of fans will get up very early to watch a semi-final Australia is not competing in, shows our dedication to Eurovision.

To not turn that into more ticket sales is a failure.

The event did gain some media traction in the final week but the damage was done. The PR firm (hired late in the campaign to be fair to them) made a decision to focus attention on getting influencers involved which made some sense in Brisbane but literally no sense at the final event in Sydney.

There was a complete misunderstanding of the audience and the fan community.

This was not lost on fans themselves who gave the promotion 3.60/5.00 stars.

What fans were disappointed with:

  • Poor promotion (influencers at the event who can't get people to go after made no sense), not using people like Epic Sax Guy more.

  • The promotion. Until the night of the show we were unsure who had actually travelled here

  • Poorly promoted - it was like they wanted the tour to fail. I actually thought it was going to be cancelled due to low sales in Melbourne. I had friends reply to my Instagram stories with shock that they didnt know it was on.

  • Promotion was left to be desired

  • Better communication in terms of promotion and logistics leading up to the event.

Other points

Many fans wanted to see merchandise available, big Eurovision stars and more production like LEDs and pyros.

Some also wanted to see the event in other cities such as Perth, Adelaide and Darwin.

Although some improvements could be made, fans do need to consider the logistics and cost of travelling to Australia.

Some expectations should be tempered though it did seem there was a big demand for merchandise so with more organisation, further profit could have been made there.

Overall

Eurovision on Tour succeeded due to the passion of artists and despite issues with the organisation and promotion.

It has the potential to grow and have even more success if it were to come back.

However, to do so, will require the same commitment to fans as they gave to the event. It will need to build trust by respecting and communicating with the fans accordingly.

Working with the fan community as well as traditional promotional routes will be key to its success.

We do hope it will be back!
