We profile the 2026 entry from Malta, including details on the artist, song, how it was chosen, odds, fan reaction, and how the nation has fared at Eurovision.

One of Eurovision's smallest competing nations, Malta has taken part in the Eurovision Song Contest 37 times since its debut in 1971. After an initial stumble in its first two years competing, coming last both times, Malta took part only one more time before withdrawing from the competition for 16 years. They made a comeback in 1991 and have participated every year since.

This return marked a run of strong result for Malta in the 90s, coming top 10 for eight years in a row, including two top three places! Their best ever result is a pair of second-place rankings for 7th Wonder by Ira Losco (2002) and Angel by Chiara (2005). However in recent years their qualification record has been more spotty, with Malta only having a qualification rate of 40% in the last 10 years.

Representing Malta at Eurovision 2026 in Vienna is Aidan with his song Bella. He will be hoping to continue Malta's qualification streak which Miriana Conte (Serving) started in Basel last year.

You can find out more about Aidan and his entry below.

About the artist

Aidan is a Maltese artist, hailing from the city of Żejtun in Malta. Aidan competed in many local talent shows as a child, collecting trophies along the way, before coming into the public spotlight when he tried to represent Malta at the 2015 Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

Since then he has taken part several times at the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, coming 4th in 2018 and 2nd in 2022. In 2023 he entered the competition once again with his song Regina but was unfortunately disqualified due to the Maltese broadcaster's rules regarding song promotion ahead of the contest. He finally went on to achieve victory in 2026.

Outside of the Eurovison context, Aidan has had 14 songs reach number 1 on the Maltese Radio Airplay charts, including his 2022 Malta Eurovision Song Contest entry, Ritmu, which went on to spend 3 weeks at the top of the Maltese Radio Airplay charts.

He also recently made history by attracting a crowd of 10,000 people to his concert AIDAN THE SHOW; the largest attendance ever recorded for a local solo artist in Malta.

About the song

Bella is a nostalgic orchestral ballad that draws upon the romance of the 1950s-1960s era, inspired by artists such as Frank Sinatra. It features rich instrumentation and uses mood and emotion to draw you in, mixing languages and vintage jazz-pop influences to tell a bittersweet love story. Thematically, the song is about dealing with lost love and longing as emphasised by the lyrics (“all the nights that you danced with me”) and a hopeful yearning for a sense of reunion or emotional closure.

Bella was written solely by Aidan himself, with the composition being a collaboration between Aidan, Sarah Bonnici (who represented Malta at the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest) and Joep Van Den Boom.

The repeated name “Bella” (meaning “beautiful”) represents both a specific person and an idealised, almost poetic symbol of love and nostalgia.

It is the first time Malta has sent a song that includes the Maltese language so prominently in 54 years, making this quite a historic achievement.

How was Aidan chosen for Eurovision?

The Maltese participating broadcaster, Public Broadcasting Services (PBS), selected its entry for the contest through the national final Malta Eurovision Song Contest (MESC) 2026.

Bella by Aidan won the contest ahead of 17 other songs after advancing through to the final from the semi-final. In the final, Bella finished first with the juries (113 points) and second with the televote (170 points) to win by 15 points with a total of 283 points.

Malta will compete in the Second Semi-Final of the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest on 14 May 2026 in Vienna.
