It’s official! Duncan Laurence has done it, ‘Arcade’ has surpassed ‘Euphoria’ as the most streamed Eurovision winning song on Spotify!
Duncan Laurence won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israel, with a spectacular and emotional performance of ‘Arcade’ representing the Netherlands. His win gave the Netherlands their fifth Eurovision win.
We expected ‘Arcade’ to overtake ‘Euphoria’ when we last reviewed the most streamed Eurovision winning songs back in November 2020. We have been ranking all the Eurovision winning songs, that can be streamed on Spotify in Australia based on the number of accumulated play counts.
Duncan Laurence beat Loreen’s strong grip at No. 1 as the most streaming Eurovision winning song by 12,777,425 play counts as of January 8. 'Arcade’ has now accumulated 169,514,980 Spotify play counts (up 30,793,342 play counts since November 19, 2020) against ‘Euphoria’ at 156,737,555 play counts (only up 2,241,024 play counts since November 19, 2020).
‘Arcade’ has been making the gradual climb to the top. In November ‘Arcade’ knocked off ’Heroes’ by Mäns Zelmerlöw to claim the No.2 spot with an increase of over 21 million play counts over 60 days.
The recent increase in Duncan Laurence’s ‘Arcade’ is attributed to the release of the duet version back in November 27 2020 with FLETCHER. FLETCHER is an American singer and songwriter who rose to fame in 2019 when her song ‘Undrunk’ went viral and charted on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 1 on Spotify’s Viral Chart in the United States.
The factors into the major increase of play counts from ‘Arcade’, include that he is the most recent Eurovision winner, hence getting a lot of rotation on playlists and he recently released his debut album, ‘Small Town Boy’, which reached No. 6 on the Dutch Album Top 100 chart and has been certified Platinum in the Netherlands with sales exceeding 40,000 units.
The increase in Spotify play counts could also be attributed to ‘Arcade’ becoming popular on TikTok. ‘Arcade’ by Duncan Laurance together with his duet with FLETCHER have garnered over 302,000 views. When you compare it to ‘Euphoria’ which only has over six thousand views ‘Arcade’ has done rather well! Both of them don't get anywhere near as close to Netta’s 2018 Eurovision winning song ‘Toy’ though, which has over 2.1 million views on TikTok.
When we look at the play counts from all the Eurovision songs on Spotify, ‘Arcade’ still has a long way to go to beat the most streamed Eurovision song of all time, ’Soldi’. The Eurovision 2019 song from Italy by Mahmood is way ahead among the Eurovision alumni with a total of 206,523,097 play counts.
