Czech Republic: Songs revealed and voting opens for ESCZ 2023

The Czech broadcaster, Česká Televize (ČT), have released the five songs that are in the running for the ticket to Liverpool to represent the Czech Republic this year.


This follows the live national final that aired this morning (Australian time, evening in Europe) on the official Eurovision Song Contest YouTube channel.



The show will be hosted by Adam Mišík, who is known for having released two albums, his acting, and his presenting skills. Hosts of the Green Room are Rob Lilley and James Rowe from The Euro Trip Podcast.


The winner of ESCZ 2023 will be determined by a public vote via the official Eurovision Song Contest app. This will consist of 70% international audiences and 30% Czech audiences.


The voting window has now opened and will close on February 6, 2023. The winner will be announced on February, 7 2023. This is the first time in 15 years that the Czech Republic will use a live show to determine their participant.

The artists and songs are:

Maella - 'Flood'



Maella originally hails from Prague and is the daughter of a jazz musician. She is now based in London and has adopted a dark alt-pop sound. She has released three singles which have received airplay on the BBC.


Pam Rabbit - 'ghosting'



This is Pam Rabbit’s third time at ESCZ after entering the competition in 2019 and 2020. She was a backing vocalist for Mikolas Josef in 2018 at Eurovision in Lisbon.


Rabbit does not identify as a musician but as a creator who “does a little bit of everything involving music.” She is inspired by her “fictional haunting, yet humorous, tragic world, which helps her understand, explain, and cope with the real one.” This gives her a quirky and edgy pop sound. Pam Rabbit also directs music videos.


Markéta Irglová - 'H A P P Y'



Markéta Irglová is a Czech-Icelandic singer-songwriter, musician and actress. She won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for co-writing ‘Falling Slowly’ for the 2007 Irish indie film Once.


In 2022, Irglová entered Söngvakeppnin- the National Final competition of her adoptive home country with the song ‘Mögulegt’. She finished in 4th place in her semi final and did not advance to the final.


Vesna - 'My Sister's Crown'



Vesna is a five piece folk-pop band with their members hailing from Czech Republic, Slovakia and Russia. The band has released two albums and have won several national music awards. They have supported some major European artists on concert tours.



RODAN - 'Introvert Party Club'



RODAN is a 20 year old ingénu whose genre is described as ‘contemporary pop mixed with indie folk’ His first single ‘Gone’ went straight to the top of the Czech music charts in early 2021. This led him to be nominated for ‘Discovery of the Year- 2021’. He released his first album in 2022.


The Czech Republic have participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 10 times with their best result being 6th place in 2018 with Mikolas Josef and the song 'Lie To Me'. In 2022, they were represented by We Are Domi with ‘Lights Off’ placing 22nd in the Grand Final.
