An Aussie will design the Eurovision 2023 stage



Overnight the BBC named the team who will lead the production of Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool.


The team consists of:

  • Multi Camera Directors: Nikki Parsons, Richard Valentine and Ollie Bartlett

  • Lead Creative Director: Dan Shipton

  • Music Director: Kojo Samuel

  • Set Designer: Julio Himede

  • Head of Sound: Robert Edwards

  • Lighting Designer: Tim Routledge


A name of significance for Australia is Julio Himede.


Julio, who is originally from El Salvador, studied at Griffith University in Brisbane and the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) in Design, and is currently located in New York.


Julio has designed sets for many major events and TV shows including 64th Annual Grammy Awards, the 2018-2021 MTV Video Music Awards, the 2016-2021 MTV EMAs, Disney’s Beauty and The Beast: A 30th Celebration and the American Song Contest.



Some of Julio's work including the American Song Contest and the MTV European Music Awards.


His work on the 64th Annual Grammy Awards was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special.


Other names of note in the production team line-up is Dan Shipton as Lead Creative Director.


Dan's credits include Little Mix: The Confetti Tour, Westlife: The Wildest Dreams Tour,Ava Max (European promotional campaign including EMAs performance), and Jurassic World Live Tour. Along with Marvin Dietmann he has also been the Creative Director of a number of Eurovision Song Contest performances including Sam Ryder in 2022.


He will work in collaboration with German Nenov who has been appointed by Ukrainian broadcaster UA:PBC as their Creative Director.
