To mark the colourful spirit of the Bahamas on their Independence Day this 10 July, we wanted to celebrate a surprising link between the Caribbean paradise and the Eurovision Song Contest - in the form of Australia’s very own Guy Sebastian!
Â
Guy’s Bahamian breakthrough
Â
In 2015, Australia joined the Eurovision Song Contest as a special guest for its 60th anniversary, held in Vienna, Austria. Guy Sebastian, already a household name for us Down Under, took to the stage with Tonight Again, a funky, upbeat pop anthem that showcased the soulful vocals that he is famous for.
Â
The song placed an impressive 5th in the Grand Final, but its impact reached far beyond Europe.
So just how did an Australian Eurovision entry find its way to the Bahamas? Let’s find out.
Chart attack
Â
While the Bahamas has never officially participated in the Eurovision Song Contest, the country has certainly embraced one standout Eurovision hit in particular.
Guy’s Tonight Again is one of the only confirmed Eurovision entries to have featured on the Bahaman music charts!
Â
What is especially remarkable is that Tonight Again reached a peak of No. 4 on the Bahamas' iTunes chart back in May 2015, capturing the hearts of Bahamian music lovers with a song that was adored by Europe and the Caribbean alike.
Â
This unexpected but fascinating success highlights the global reach of the music from the Eurovision Song Contest, proving that even countries thousands of kilometres from the contest’s European heartland can still pick a quality tune when they hear it (even if as Aussies we are a bit biased towards our Guy!).
Â
Happy Bahamas Independence Day!
