This morning, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that the winners of Festival da Canção 2026, Bandidos do Cante, will take part in the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna this May.
A rule change to the festival this year made it so the winner of Festival da Canção 2026 will merely be "eligible" to participate at the Eurovision Song Contest. This mimics the process in other participating countries such as Italy, where the winner of the Sanremo Music Festival only receives the right of refusal to participate at Eurovision.
On 10 December, 17 artists (between them representing 12 of the acts at this year's national final) signed an open letter confirming that they would boycott participation at the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest.
Bandidos do Cante were just one of two acts to confirm before Festival da Canção that they would compete at Eurovision 2026 if they won.
A detailed explanation of the events at the festival can be found here.
The quintet hailing from the region of Alentejo in southern Portugal comprises of childhood friends Miguel Costa, Duarte Farias, Francisco Raposo, Luís Aleixo and Francisco Pestana whose music is influenced with 'Cante Alentejano', a traditional way of singing in Alentejo (recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity), The group have 200,000 monthly listeners and has recently completed a tour, with over 80 concerts. They released their debut album Bairro das Flores in January 2026. Bandidos do Cante will perform in the first half of the first semi-final at Eurovision 2026.
Portugal at Eurovision
Portugal has competed 54 times since their debut in 1964 and has won the Eurovision Song Contest once with Salvador Sobral and Amar pelos dois in 2017.
Last year Portugal was represented by NAPA with Deslocado which finished in 21st place.

Interesting detail that Bandidos do Cante were only one of two acts willing to confirm Eurovision if they won. Their Cante Alentejano background feels visually rich too; when making fan graphics, I’d probably use Pixlio AI, an AI image combiner, or even an AI professional headshot for clean profile-style edits.
It's interesting how the rule change this year made the winner of Festival da Canção only "eligible" rather than automatically guaranteed a spot in Vienna. With all the controversy and open letters flying around, fans might appreciate having well-timed subtitles for interviews or behind-the-scenes clips about Bandidos do Cante's Alentejo traditions. If you ever need to convert caption files for such videos, a reliable SRT to VTT converter can help keep those community translations accurate.
It is great to see Bandidos Do Cante confirming their intention to participate, especially because Portugal always brings such a distinctive musical identity to Eurovision. The mix of tradition, regional sound, and modern stage presentation is exactly what makes the contest interesting year after year.
One thing I enjoy about Eurovision season is how many artists experiment with early song ideas before finding the final version that feels right for the stage. Tools like an AI song generator can be useful at the demo stage, especially for testing different moods, hooks, and arrangement directions before a team moves into full production.
I hope Portugal continues to lean into songs with real character rather than chasing the same formula everyone else…
Very useful breakdown.
Even with image handling, balancing size and quality can be tricky — tinyimagepro has been helpful for quick fixes.
Sometimes it's the visuals that have the most impact on the overall experience. I've noticed that in Australia, many people are starting to appreciate platforms with a calmer, cleaner design, where they don't feel https://stayy-casino.com/ constantly overwhelmed. This platform left me with exactly that impression. Everything looks modern, yet not overwhelming. I liked how the sections are logically laid out, and even on your first visit, there's no confusion. This approach helps you relax and explore the service's features without feeling constantly distracted or overwhelmed with unnecessary information 😀
