Following a board meeting this week, Icelandic broadcaster RÚV has announced that Iceland may not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027.

If Iceland does withdraw from the 2027 Contest, it means Iceland will remain absent from the Contest for a second consecutive year, having also withdrawn from Eurovision 2026.

RÚV confirmed that the factors which led to its withdrawal from Eurovision 2026 remain unresolved. The broadcaster was among a number of European broadcasters that opposed Israel's continued participation in the Contest.

After reviewing the situation ahead of Eurovision 2027, the broadcaster held a board meeting on 30 September 2026 where six of nine board members voted against a 2027 participation. In a statement, RÚV said it believes the circumstances surrounding Eurovision have not changed sufficiently to support a return in 2027:

To notify the EBU that the Icelandic National Broadcasting Corporation will not participate in Eurovision in 2027 unless Israel is barred from participating in the competition. The previous call to the EBU that Israel be expelled from the competition is reiterated and it is requested that the radio director convey that reiteration.

Further news on a potential 2027 by Iceland withdrawal is imminent.

Iceland at Eurovision

Iceland made its Eurovision debut in 1986 and has competed 37 times. Despite becoming one of the Contest's most passionate Eurovision nations, Iceland is still searching for its first Eurovision victory.

Its best results remain two second-place finishes, achieved by Selma with All Out of Luck in 1999 and Yohanna with Is It True? in 2009. The cancelled Eurovision of 2020 could have been the small nation's first win with Daði & Gagnamagnið - hink About Things.

Iceland's most recent Eurovision representative was VÆB, who competed in 2025 with Róa.

Who has confirmed participation for 2027?

Meanwhile, two other broadcasters that sat out Eurovision 2026, namely Spain and Slovenia, are yet to announce their plans for next year's Contest.

Ireland have confirmed they will not be returning for the 2027 Contest.

Also in recent news, it is said that Cechia may also withdraw from the 2027 Contest, citing budget concerns.
