We recently completed our fifth annual Eurovision Fan Survey with 424 responses from fans in 33 countries taking part.
With those results we found out who the most typical or "average" Eurovision fan was, but now we want to focus in on the Aussies.
Just over half of the respondents to the survey were from Australia and although there were some similarities, there were a lot of differences.
So who is the average Aussie Eurovision fan? The most "typical" is:
Male
In some form of relationship
Over 35 years old
LGBTIQ+
But let's go a little deeper than that....
Demographics
Generally Aussie respondents were more likely to be:
Older - 70% were over 35 compared to 58% of all fans

Understandably, Australian fans were far more interested in AFL than international fans.
Additionally, Aussies were slightly more interested in quizzes/trivia, history, reading, film/cinema, tennis and rugby league.
While they were less interested geography, languages, gaming, football/socce and athletics.

General promotion of the Contest was the main way Aussies got into Eurovision with 37% of fans in this segment. This was similar to the result of all fans at 38%.
Parents were next best at 28%, which is lower than average fans which was at 34%.
Aussies were more likely to discover Eurovision via their friends (17% to 11%) and their partner (5% to 3%).
When did fans get into the contest?
Australians were most likely to get into Eurovision during the 2010s (38%) and the 2000s (23%)
Somewhat surprisingly there wasn't a great deal of difference in which decade Australians became a fan of Eurovision to the average fan.
For example, 15% of Aussies became fans between in the 60s,70s or 80s, only slightly less than all fans at 16%.
2014, the year Jessica Mauboy performed as an interval act, was the most common year Aussies got into the Contest. This was followed by our debut year 2015 and the year Loreen had her first victory, 2012.
The full list of most common years were:
2014 - 17
2015 - 13
2012 - 11
2016 - 11
