Name and where you live

My name is Rebecca, and I live in the southern suburbs of Perth! I’ve lived here my whole life. It’s quiet and sometimes a little boring out here, but I wouldn’t change that for anything.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I’m a 28-year-old that tends to have a bit of an existential crisis anytime I’m asked to talk about myself, so we’ll see how much I can actually get written here I guess!

I’ve had a passion for most things in the Arts since I was very little, but particularly languages and writing. I have a degree in Creative Writing and Japanese, the latter of which I’ll likely never use in a professional capacity but I’m thankful to have done it anyway. In 2023 I spent half a year living in Japan as an exchange student.

My dream since about the age of 7 has been to be a published novelist, but in the meantime I’m still trying to find another way to pay the bills. Creative Writers aren’t exactly in high demand these days (don’t get me started or I won’t stop) so I’m currently branching out into adjacent fields like journalism, marketing and communication, and so on while I work on building a portfolio and making industry connections.

As you might have guessed from my degree I’ve got a bit of a weeb streak in me, but believe it or not the interest in the language came first, not the other way around. I started learning Japanese in primary school, and from there I found gaming, which led to Anime and Manga, and then to Japanese music. I’m still a big Nintendo gamer– Pokemon, Animal Crossing and  Fire Emblem in particular. I also like a good rhythm game, but my favourite is probably the Project Diva series. In high school I was a huge Anime nerd, and though I don’t particularly keep up with it anymore I still have a few favourites like Bleach and Blue Exorcist. I love all sorts of music but Japanese music really manages to scratch an itch inside my silly little monkey brain. Some of my favourite artists are Asian Kung-Fu Generation, BRADIO, FLOW and Hello Sleepwalkers. In the same vein I am a huge fan of vocal synth music (mostly Vocaloid honestly, if the mention of Project Diva earlier wasn’t a hint). I just really love a good tune.

In my spare time I love a good book or a jigsaw puzzle. Recently I’ve been getting into other crafty things like sewing and origami, but I think that’s a story for next time.

What is your Eurovision journey?

Though I never knew the name of it, Eurovision was always kind of in my peripherals growing up. ABBA was a huge hit in Australia, of course; we also had a lot of the UK’s songs on the radio over the years. I even remember hearing the Olsen Brothers enough that I loved the song before I knew it was a Eurovision winner. I have blurry memories of waking up too early for cartoons to have started on the weekends and seeing some sort of televised concert coming to a close. I would dance to a song called Satellite by Lena on Just Dance 3 without a clue where it came from. I saw a video on tumblr of this amazing Greek song about alcohol that was as funny as it was catchy.

I remember my proper introduction to Eurovision very vividly; nursing a cold on a Saturday night in 2015, covered in a litter of puppies that I was dog-sitting for a friend. I just wanted something to put on as background noise while I cooed over the puppies. But I distinctly remember watching Eduard Romanyuta dance around on stage flanked by leather-clad cops and thinking “maybe I should change the channel if this is what all of the songs are going to be like.” Thank goodness that I gave it more of a chance!

Being as easily distracted as I am, it took a couple of years for me to fully commit to following the contest every year and even longer to follow the pre-season. 2018 was the first year I watched the contest live, sitting up in bed with my laptop balanced on my pillow. For years this was my routine, until late 2024 when I got a position as a team member of ESCUnited. In 2025 I followed the pre-season closely for the first time, as thrilling as it was exhausting.

At the end of 2025 I was given the opportunity to join the AV team and I couldn’t be more grateful and excited. I’m looking forward to all the awesome stuff we can get up to in the future!

Do you have any affinity with nations other than Australia?

My family has (distant) roots in Norway, so I always pay a little more attention to them and it’s a bonus when they send a great song. Beyond that I’ve always been very partial to Latvia, despite the rest of Europe seeming to disagree with me– one of my favourite entries of 2019 was That Night by Carousel and it made me so upset that nobody else seemed to think it was anything other than a snoozefest!

Quick questions on Eurovision entries

Best winner:

Nemo - The Code (2023). As a genderqueer person this song really means a lot to me. It’s the only time I’ve ever cried watching a song win the contest.

Favourite three non-Australian entries:

This is a stupidly hard question. My answer to this question changes approximately three times a week. Currently:

Mamagama - Run With U (2025); Eugent Bushpepa - Mall (2018); Maraaya - Here For You (2015)

Favourite Australian entry:

Voyager - Promise (2023). Australia’s band scene is a severely untapped Eurovision resource.

Makes you dance:

5miinust x Puuluup - (Nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi (2024). They are insane and their energy is so infectious.

Favourite non-qualifier:

ZiBBZ - Stones (2018). One of my top 3 of 2018– I was devastated when they didn’t qualify!

Favourite Eurovision year:

For the quality of the songs: 2018 and 2020 (oh what could have been…)

For the quality of the live shows: 2023. Hannah Waddingham owned the whole week.

Favourite national finals:

Don’t currently have one! I think I need a couple more years of viewing to make a call here.

Favourite national final songs:

All of these are from the 2025 season but I’m sure that will change in the future!

Fenksta - Extra

Willie Peyote - Grazie ma no grazie

NIYL - Growth

Nelli Matula - Hitaammin hautaan

Mel Ömana - I’m a Queen

Luka Nižetić - Južina

gem98 - PSYCHO
