28 October is Independent Czechoslovak State Day, a day which commemorates the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918. To celebrate, the Aussievision team are taking a look at the highlights of Czechia at Eurovision.
A relative newcomer to the competition having made their semi-final debut in 2007, Czechia have managed to make the Grand Final just five times from their 13 attempts, with a qualification record of 38%.
It took years of non-qualifiers and a brief absence from the competition before Czechia finally earned their first Grand Final appearance in 2016 with Gabriela Gunčíková’s I Stand.
Despite only having five Grand Final appearances, what the nation brings to the stage is often well received and highly acclaimed, having reached the Top 10 twice and a third entry just missing out in 11th place.
The Aussievision team have ranked Czechia’s memorable Grand Final appearances to see which Czech Eurovision entry we think is the best of the best. Eight Aussievision team members have awarded scores from five points for our favourite song down to one point for the least favourite entry.
So which Czech song tops our list?
*Note we had a three-way tie for second place, which was resolved by way of counting back the most number of five points awarded to determine placements.
5. Vesna – My Sister’s Crown (10th place in 2023): 20 points
Highs: 5 points from Saskia, 4 points from Hayley
Lows: 1 point from Dale and Joel
"This is by far Czechia's strongest entry in the contest. It has such a clear vision and statement of what it wants to be. The eclectic mix of languages, sounds and genres should be jumbled but it is handled expertly to create a cohesive, poignant masterclass in songwriting." ~Saskia
"I remember everyone losing their mind when this won the national final and when it got to the Liverpool stage, we were not disappointed. Very well deserved Top 10 for Czechia. Love a feminist tune and my god that staging was slick and those queens looked amazing! ~Hayley
4. Lake Malawi - Friend of a Friend (11th place in 2019): 22 points
Highs: 4 points from Saskia, Fleur and Tim
Lows: 1 point from Sam
"It's so catchy and stands alone in a genre that we don't see often in Eurovision, let alone do well. It relies on an infectious melody, innovative staging and a charismatic performance and didn't require any major theatrics to succeed." ~Saskia
"I loved it at the time and thought too that it deserved better. It probably would not do as well by today's standards though. It's still a song that I revisit every now and then." ~Fleur
"This felt like Czech Republic being unique to itself. Lake Malawi had a very infectious, quirky attitude towards this performance. I think the song had a great staging concept and great visuals. Again, I think that this is a great representation of Czechia showing its musical might." ~Tim
3. Mikolas – Lie To Me (6th place in 2018): 22 points
Highs: 5 points from Srdjan, 4 points from Sam
Lows: 1 point from Saskia and Tim
"Catchy, fun and the closest to the type of music I normally listen to." ~Srdjan
"I remember this being so fresh and cool in 2018, and being a bit gutted this didn't crack the Top 5. Also love how one of Mikolas' dance moves has become a gay meme due to his ... interesting ... positioning XD. But in all seriousness, he delivered a fun and energetic performance, and I hope he returns to Eurovision one day." ~Sam
2. Gabriela Gunčíková – I Stand (25th place in 2016): 22 points
Highs: 5 points from Sam, 4 points from Dale and Joel
Lows: 1 point from Hayley, Srdjan & Fleur
"Such a beautiful ballad that was even more momentous given it was Czechia's first qualification to the Grand Final. Gabriela was absolutely robbed in the Grand Final running order and televote. The music video is also directed stunningly, and I love its natural feel. I will always stand with this incredible entry." ~Sam
"The very first Czech qualifier was the underrated ballad with a little bit of drama. Bit of a slow burner but something I really loved at the time." ~Dale
"This was such an underrated tune and deserved to do so much better in the Grand Final than 25th place." ~Joel
1. We Are Domi – Lights Off (22nd place in 2022): 34 points
Highs: 5 points from Dale, Tim, Hayley, Fleur and Joel, 4 points from Srdjan
Lows: 2 points from Saskia
"I'll never forget them closing the semi-final in Turin. They brought a cracking electropop dance track with an epic light show that go them a well-deserved qualification." ~Dale
"I am still listening to this - goddamn it is GOOD! If you look up robbery in the dictionary, you will find a picture of this song." ~Hayley
"Lights Off was such a delight in 2022. It just felt like such a great dance pop song that didn’t sound like a dance pop song. I really liked this song and I think finishing 22nd is incredibly underrated for the quality of this song and the performance." ~Tim
"What's not to love about a song that is immediately catchy and you can sing along to by the end of the first listen?" ~Joel
"Justice for this classic. How this was only given five televotes was a crime. I absolutely love this song, it's one of my favourite stagings and performances. Easily my favourite Czech song at Eurovision." ~Fleur

So there you have it, the Aussievision team have chosen We Are Domi as our runaway winner out of all Czechia’s Eurovision Grand Final appearances. Interestingly our team has ranked their least successful performances in our top two spots!
