Today December 6 is Independence Day in Finland, which also serves as the Nordic nation's national day.

The date commemorates when Finland declared independence from Russia in 1917 when the Bolsheviks took over the latter.

To celebrate we at the Aussievision have decided to rank the five Finnish Eurovision entries from this century that were performed in the Finnish language.

Here are the eligible contenders:

Missä miehet ratsastaa (What are the men riding?)

  • 9 points to their second favourite entry

  • 6 points to their third favourite entry

  • 3 points to their fourth favourite entry

  • 0 points to their least favourite entry.

Let's see how the team has ranked the five Finnish language Finnish Eurovision entries this century.

  1. Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät - Aina mun pitää (2015) - 21 points

Highs: 6 points from Kiel and Paul

Lows: 0 points from Joel, Rebecca, Hayley, Srdjan, John Christian, Troy, Liv, Paul and Sam

"Whether you like this song or not, it’s a hard one to forget. I appreciate what they were aiming for, and the message they were sending to Europe. Jury’s still out on if that message came across, but hey, points for making an effort not many other countries will!" ~ Rebecca

"I defend Aina mun pitaa. Not many delegations have the guts to keep their songs at under two minutes but maybe some should." ~ Saskia

  1. Kuunkuiskaajat - Työlki ellää (2010) - 57 points

Highs: 12 points from Fleur, 9 points from Sam

Lows: 0 points from Saskia, Tim and Kiel

"This is one of my favourite Finnish songs ever. So robbed. I will never get over this finishing in 11th place in the semi by 3 points. It's catchy, It's in Finnish , there is an accordion. It's perfect for Eurovision. It's a song that I will never get sick of." ~ Fleur

"This is such a funky Finnish entry. This came sixth in the tele-vote in the semi-final so I'm bloody mad at the juries for putting this in the ice box. This duo just oozes charisma and I'm glad they brought something very unique to the Eurovision stage." ~ Sam

"Polka is such an underrated genre. Light and airy and fun, I feel like I’m at a carnival or circus. The rolling consonants of the Finnish language really lend a sense of whimsy to this delightful song." ~ Rebecca

"These ladies are utterly delightful!" ~ Hayley

  1. Teräsbetoni - Missä miehet ratsastaa (2008) - 72 points

Highs: 12 points from Hayley, 9 points from Paul and Kiel

Lows: 0 points from Fleur

"I freaking love this song and my god that singer is a sexy man with an incredible vocal. HOOO-HA!" ~ Hayley

"HOO! HA! HOO! HA! Ironic that the most English words in this song are the most memorable, but good luck trying to get them out of your head. Btw this was a great power metal track and deserved much better!" ~ Kiel

"It rocked - a Finnish-language song with Finnish made heavy metal music. Yes, please! More of this." ~ Paul

"Of all the rock songs Finland has given us over the years, this sure is one of them! This is so very Finland, and so very 2000’s Eurovision. I’d argue that it hasn’t aged that well, especially in the grand scheme of Finnish rock at Eurovision, but there’s still something quite charming about it." ~ Rebecca

  1. Käärijä - Cha Cha Cha (2023) - 117 points

Highs: 12 points from Kiel, Tim, Liv and Rebecca, 9 points from John Christian, Troy, Saskia, Joel, Fleur, Hayley and Srdjan.

Lows: 0 points from Paul

"How could it not be this?! I mean I've said it all before, but this rightly sits 2nd as Finland's most successful and best Eurovision entry of all time, only behind the mighty Lordi." ~ Kiel

"What can really be said that hasn't been said before? Two and a half years later and this is still an amazing song in every sense. Käärijä and his green bolero took Europe by storm and we likely won't ever forget it. Hearing the audience chant "cha cha cha" along with the chorus will always give me a giddy, excited feeling that is hard to match." ~ Rebecca

"After being in the crowd and lucky enough to see it in the flesh, it is about as iconic as it gets. Shoulda won (there I said it)" ~Hayley

"Look, there’s no denying that this is an iconic song. Käärijä brings so much energy to the song and the performance. It is honestly a great Eurovision song and if it wasn’t for Loreen coming back in 2023, I think this would have been a clear winner. The message of having a drink or two after work to become a different person, yeah that’s relatable. Cracking song !!" ~ Tim

"Well, it's a modern day classic. It gets everyone on the dance floor while singing in their version of Finnish. He's likeable and is a fellow Rammstein fan. But just like at Eurovision, he's second place for me." ~ Fleur

"I never understood the hype around this - I still don't. Although granted, he is a brilliant performer." ~ Paul

"The most successful Finnish language entry that birthed a legend." ~ Troy

"Iconic for a reason. Truly a load-bearing entry of the 2000s, Loreen may have won but Kaarija changed the contest and opened a lot of artists eyes that would otherwise never have considered doing Eurovision." ~ Saskia

  1. Erika Vikman - Ich komme (2025) - 123 points

Highs: 12 points from Srjdan, Paul, Saskia, Joel, Troy, John Christian and Sam, 9 points from Liv, Rebecca and Tim

Lows: 3 points from Hayley and Kiel

"How this didn’t crack the Top 5 - or even win - is beyond me. The Eurovision stage felt like The Erika Show for 3 minutes whilst she delivered the most powerful and compelling performance of the night. Love this song and it’s still in regular rotation on my playlist." ~ Joel

"Iche Komme pushes the boundaries of what pop is. It’s a big over-the-top, camp romp… all things many pop sings are, but it’s not a melodic or even ear-worm type pop song. With its driving pace and big vocal that sometimes borders on dissonant, it’s such a unique track. And I don’t think anyone other than Erika could have brought it to life." ~ Troy

"THIS IS NOT RECENCY BIAS TALKING! Believe the hype because Ich Komme is THAT good, from the stage show to the stage presence of Erika herself there's really no room for improvement." ~ Saskia

"The power of Erica Vikman caused me just after her Grand Final performance to try booking 5 hotels in Helsinki, she might have missed out on the Top 10 but she secured a place in my heart." ~ Liv

"Everything about it is just fantastic! I have been waiting to see Erika at Eurovision since first becoming a fan in 2020, this was a dream come true." ~ Srdjan

"Erika's incredible charisma really sells this song. She owns every inch of that stage, and even without knowing a lick of Finnish you can just feel those powerful, sexy vibes." ~ Rebecca

"This is the most camp, most aura, most impactful Finnish-language entry of the bunch." ~ John Christian

"A celebration of sexuality, self-love, and boldness in a culture that hides that - a phenomenal entry that deserved way better on the scoreboard." ~ Paul

______________________

As the poetic Paul says Erika may have deserved better on the Eurovision scoreboard - but at least she tops this scoreboard. Whilst Käärijä sadly once again has to settle for second place.

We hope all our Finnish followers and readers have a fabulous Independence Day!
