'Eurovision Canada' coming in 2023

Overnight the European Broadcasting Union announced that Canada is joining the Eurovision family by hosting their own song contest titled, 'Eurovision Canada'. In similar vein to the American Song Contest, artists from each of the then Canadian provinces and three territories will compete with original songs in a nation wide television competition.

During the contest we'll see artists competing from:

  • Ontario

  • Quebec

  • Nova Scotia

  • New Brunswick

  • Manitoba

  • British Columbia

  • Prince Edward Island

  • Saskatchewan

  • Alberta

  • Newfoundland & Labrador

  • Northwest Territories

  • Yukon

  • Nunavut

Not many details are known yet about the new contest such as the broadcaster, artists, hosts or dates but the EBU has revealed that the format will consist of qualifying rounds, semi-finals and a grand finale to crown the best original song.

The executive supervisior of the Eurovision Song Contest, Martin Österdahl commented:

‘The Eurovision Song Contest’s unique legacy dates back 67 years and its worldwide popularity continues to grow. It is time for Canada to join the party and become a player in this worldwide spectacle. The love of music is universal and the celebration of music’s different genres and styles transcends boundaries, uniting people in a way that no other art form can. We are excited to have found the best partners to offer another version of this joyful phenomenon to new fans and to share this remarkable competition with the Canadian people.’

This won't be the first time a Canadian will be peforming in a Eurovision contest. Of course Celine Dion represented Switzerland with the song 'Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi' in the Eurovision Song Contest 1988 and won the whole competition. Other Canadians that have graced the Eurovision stage include Katerina Duska (Greece 2019), Rykka (Switzerland 2016), Natasha St. Pier (France 2001) and many more.
