Aussievision's Eurovision 2021 Grand Final predictions

The trophy of the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 — EBU/THOMAS HANSES

After seeing all the semi-finals plus the big 5 and host performances, the Aussievision team has made predictions on their top 3 for the Eurovision 2021 grand final and a further prediction on the results.

We run through each team member in alphabetical order:

Ally

Top 3 prediction 1st - Malta: Destiny - 'Je Me Casse'

2nd - Iceland: Daði and Gagnamagnið - '10 Years'

3rd - Bulgaria: Victoria - 'Growing up is getting old'

I think Malta will win because I believe that not only does it have both strong jury and televote appeal, but I think it has a broader appeal amongst the televoting public then some of the other favourites. I originally was going to predict Iceland, but I believe Malta will have a stronger jury score, which is what ultimately will win them the title.

Further prediction:

Despite being only 18th in the odds, I think Serbia will make the left hand side of the scoreboard. It’s uptempo, it’s an absolute banger and it’s in Serbian, which will stand out in that Grand Final lineup.

Cooper

Top 3 prediction

1st - Malta: Destiny - 'Je Me Casse'

2nd - Ukraine: Go_A - 'SHUM'

3rd - Lithuania: The Roop - 'Discoteque'

Malta will win this year, they have it all! A charismatic, loveable (previous Junior Eurovision winning) artist in Destiny who can sing the hell out a 'Je Me Casse'. The staging works, the outfit works and the presentation is something Malta can proud of. The Maltese have been waiting the longest without a win so hopefully Destiny can change that!

Further prediction:

The United Kingdom is going to do better than expected in the Public vote this year, its in inoffensive pop number and I can see it doing pretty good for the UK

Dale

Top 3 prediction

1st - Malta: Destiny - 'Je Me Casse'

2nd - Italy: Måneskin - 'Zitti e buoni'

3rd - Switzerland: Switzerland: Gjon's Tears - 'Tout l'univers'

Despite the tough running order, songs 'Je Me Casse' and Destiny's vocal are exactly what juries LOVE at Eurovision. A win in the jury and a strong enough televote can get her over the line ahead of my personal favourite Italy who look the winners on paper with that great running spot. It's a tough year, I can see five song winning. Should be an exciting finish!

Further prediction:

Sweden will have their worst result since 2010. Despite a nice package, there are many others vying for that sweet sweet jury love. It'll be bottom five of televote and finish somewhere between 15th and 20th.

Emma

Top 3 prediction

1st - Malta: Destiny - 'Je Me Casse'

2nd - Iceland: Daði and Gagnamagnið - '10 Years'

3rd - Lithuania: The Roop - 'Discoteque'

Malta will win because it has high appeal to juries and televoters alike. With its swing chorus it sounds like nothing else in the competition, but is still commercial enough to get radio airplay. The female empowerment theme will resonate with many televoters and even if it doesn’t, viewers should still appreciate Destiny’s soaring vocals and sass on stage. The performance could be straight out of a music award show and most importantly you can see that she enjoys performing and is having fun.

Further prediction:

Portugal to finish on left hand side of scoreboard. Whilst many thought this wouldn’t make it through to the Grand Final based on the studio version, the sublime storytelling of The Black Mamba will see this score much better than predicted. Whilst some may find this boring and dated, older viewers will appreciate the early 70’s vibe and emotion behind the song with staging used to its maximum potential here.

Fleur

Top 3 prediction

1st - Italy: Måneskin - 'Zitti e buoni'

2nd - Switzerland: Gjon's Tears - 'Tout l'univers' 3rd - Ukraine: Go_A - 'SHUM' Måneskin have a brilliant song. They have performed fantastically in rehearsals all week. They look awesome, are #1 in the betting odds and have drawn #24 in the running order. Everything is perfectly set for them to take Italy's third ever win in the contest.

Further prediction: The Black Mamba is the dark horse. I did not even rate this in Festival da Cançao but that exquisite staging blew me away in the semi final. This has been my biggest improver. It is tucked away at #7 in the running order after 6 female vocal acts and before another one. It will be the only male voice heard in the first half hour on Sunday morning, so it is going to stand out. For those reasons, I am predicting Portugal to place in Top 10.

Ford

Top 3 prediction 1st - Switzerland: Gjon's Tears - 'Tout l'univers'

2nd - Bulgaria: Victoria - 'Growing up is getting old'

3rd - San Marino: Senhit ft Flo Rida - 'Andrenalina'

Switzerland has been waiting so long to win the Eurovision Song Contest again, and if there's an entry that deserves to take that place, it's Gjon's Tears 'Tout l'Univers'. Gjon has the voice of an angel, with falsettos that come to life with brilliance during the live performances. The staging is easily one of Sacha Jean-Baptiste's best works to date, with the performance so memorable that it will be unforgettable to Eurovision fans for years to come. As a whole Eurovision package, nothing quite excites me as much as the Swiss entry this year.

Further prediction:

Italy has a technically higher chance of hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 than any other country. Italy itself currently tops the betting odds (at the time of writing), giving it a really decent chance of winning the contest already, but two other countries that also sit in the top ten in the betting odds are also likely to need to co-host with RAI in Italy, including San Marino's SMRTV (because hosting in Valentina's back yard isn't exactly a great option, there aren't enough hotels in the country, and the cost of hosting Eurovision is multiple times higher than the broadcaster's annual budget) and Malta's PBS (because the logistics of hosting Eurovision are intensely more difficult that hosting Junior Eurovision, with more requirements for hotel rooms, press centres, and the need for a larger arena that can hold more fans, which the nation doesn't appear to have an arena with the requirements needed).

Guy

Top 3 prediction 1st - Malta: Destiny - 'Je Me Casse'

2nd - Italy: Måneskin - 'Zitti e buoni'

3rd - France: Barbara Pravi - 'Voilà'

I think Destiny’s going to take the trophy for Malta this year, mostly because she has absolutely nailed it on stage. It wasn’t in my personal top 10 before the semi-final, but seeing her slay that performance was a joy to watch and I’m pretty sure a lot of other people will have lifted it up their rankings too. I think her vocal talent will get her jury points, and the song is likely to appeal to a broader audience than the other top contenders like Italy and Switzerland - meaning more televotes.

Further prediction:

I’m also predicting Serbia will have their best result since Beauty Never Lies in 2015. Now I’ve seen how much they’ve elevated the song with the choreography and over-all star power, I think they’ll finish just shy of the top 10.

Hugo

Top 3 prediction

1st - Switzerland: Gjon's Tears - 'Tout l'univers'

2nd - Italy: Måneskin - 'Zitti e buoni'

3rd - France: Barbara Pravi - 'Voilà'

This has been my winner the whole time, and nothing has changed going into the grand final. The song is simply outstanding, the vocals are on point, the staging is simple yet done really well. Gjon has that X factor about him which can push him to the title. It truly is a magic moment for those three minutes.

Further prediction:

Ukraine to come top 5 in the televote - great running order, nothing sounds like this which will certainly grab people’s attention.

Josh

Top 3 prediction 1st - San Marino: Senhit ft Flo Rida - 'Andrenalina'

2nd - Bulgaria: Victoria - 'Growing up is getting old'

3rd - Switzerland: Gjon's Tears - 'Tout l'univers'

This song has revitalised my existence. Every second of it gives me life. The ethnic sounds bring back Eurovision memories of Turkey’s best entries and the staging is a total hot mess in the best way possible.

This entry has such a likeable quality to it that I feel Europe will respond to it with adoration. Flo Rida being on the stage will surprise many casual viewers and I can see his appearance bolstering the televote to the point where San Marino is sure to break into the top 10. Could it win? Probably not, but I would not be able to wipe the smile off my face until next Eurovision if Senhit and Flo managed to pull off the biggest underdog victory ever.

Further prediction:

My outsider pick is for Sweden to underperform massively. I think that the Swedish formula is wearing thin on the general public and certainly with me. The jury will still give them a decent vote but I believe Sweden will end up on the top of the right hand side of the scoreboard. The song is just too sanitised and basic for my liking. I will try to refrain from the #DotterWasRobbed narrative as much as I can.

Kyriakos

Top 3 prediction 1st - France: Barbara Pravi - 'Voilà'

2nd - Italy: Måneskin - 'Zitti e buoni'

3rd - Malta: Destiny - 'Je Me Casse'

I really think Barbara will win the whole Contest, every time she performs she gives her performance more and more oomph and emotion. It screams WINNER and then when I check the translation of the song, it is about a woman stripped bare telling the world "here I am". I will be shocked if France don't do well.

Further prediction:

My prediction is that The Black Mamba will make Portugal proud and reach the top 10 if not the top 5! I want them to cause an upset!

Mike

Top 3 prediction 1st - Italy: Måneskin - 'Zitti e buoni'

2nd - France: Barbara Pravi - 'Voilà'

3rd - Malta: Destiny - 'Je Me Casse'

This is excellent, it's impactful, this is going to get a very big televote. It's all about the jury vote, that's the only hurdle I see, it could be fifth or sixth there... it depends how far behind it is. But it's a plum spot and I can see it taking the crown.

Further prediction:

The UK will unfortunately finish last for the second straight Eurovision. Sandwiched between Serbia and Greece, this lacks impact and I can't see where the points are coming from.

Steve

Top 3 prediction 1st - Italy: Måneskin - 'Zitti e buoni'

2nd - Switzerland: Gjon's Tears - 'Tout l'univers'

3rd - France: Barbara Pravi - 'Voilà'

Whilst my heart will always belong to Barbara Pravi’s 'Voilà', my head says that Måneskin and 'Zitti e buoni' have the more appealing package overall, particularly from a televote perspective. The Italian group has had the momentum over recent days, has been given a plum spot in the Grand Final, and brings bucketfuls of charisma, energy, passion and power to the stage. In addition, for a non-rock fan like me genuinely to enjoy the performance is a strong indication that genre shouldn’t prove a hindrance to success here. Milano 2021? SI!

Further prediction:

Having predicted Italy to win, I think the jury vote winner is a tussle between France’s Barbara Pravi and Switzerland’s Gjon’s Tears. No other acts have blown me away with their vocals to the same extent, and I think the relatively simple - but effective - staging of both puts them on a par. Given that some might find the French entry to be dated (rather than, in my view, “classic”), I’m going to say that Gjon will be atop the scoreboard once all the juries’ scores have been revealed.

Wade

Top 3 prediction

1st - Switzerland: Gjon's Tears - 'Tout l'univers'Switzerland

2nd - Russia: Manizha - 'Russian Woman'

3rd - Bulgaria: Victoria - 'Growing up is getting old'

I think Switzerland will win this competition, he has an impeccable voice that draws you in immediately, the song is gripping, artsy yet contemporary, mystical and angelic - and he's also drawn a great position in the running order.

Further prediction:

Finland will finish higher than Italy
