Montaigne reveals meaning behind her cover of Britney Spears hit
Australian Eurovision contestant Montaigne has paid tribute to Britney Spears with a live studio cover of one of the pop star’s most-loved hits.
Montaigne’s live cover of Britney Spears’ classic, ‘Lucky’, debuted this morning on Australian radio station Triple J for its long-running ‘Like a Version’ segment.
‘Like a Version’ sees established performers to put their own spin on a well-known song.
Asked about her song choice, Montaigne told Triple J ‘Lucky’ was one of her favourite songs from childhood.
“I would sing it on my DVD karaoke a lot with my sister when we were real babies,” she said.
She also tweeted a video of the siblings performing the song as children.
The 2019 and 2020 Eurovision performer also said the song’s lyrics about an unhappy pop star resonated with her. “I assumed that a music career meant trying to reach for the greatest possible heights, which is a very capitalist goal,” she said, adding that she’d recently re-assessed her own career aspirations. “What if I can have a nice, medium life, where I do… creative work full time and not have these excesses that are really demanding, both psychologically and physically? “I think that’s a really important thing to point out – that having everything doesn’t actually fulfil you.”
The piano-driven ballad version was arranged to highlight the somberness of the original lyrics, Montaigne said. The ’Technicolor’ singer hopes Britney would hear the cover and that it would “stir something” in Britney. This isn’t the first time Montaigne has been invited to take part in ‘Like a Version’; she previously performed a cover of ‘Chandelier’ by Sia in 2015. Montaigne also performed single ‘Always Be You’ for her ‘Like a Version’ set, which Eurovision fans will remember from her returning winner’s performance at ‘Eurovision – Australia Decides’ in 2022.
