The entry

Susan - ‘Stronger With You’

Susan is 13 years old and hails from Berlin, Germany. She started her musical journey at the age of 4 by playing tambourine in the band Kids Groove. At this age, Susan also started taking singing lessons and hip-hop dance lessons, eventually leading to her dancing on stage at a Justin Bieber concert in 2016!

Susan is no stranger to competitions, having participated in music festivals in Poland, Russia, and Belarus, including New Wave and Slavianski Bazaar. In 2020, Susan participated in Season 8 of The Voice Kids Germany, where she was coached by 2010 Eurovision winner Lena Meyer-Landrut.

In Germany’s national selection show ‘Dein Song für Warschau’, Susan was one of 70 shortlisted hopefuls, eventually beating 4 other finalists to become Germany’s first ever Junior Eurovision Song Contest representative. She was selected by a jury of music professionals including Germany’s 2004 Eurovision contestant Max Mutzke, producer Martin Haas, vocal coach Michele Huesmann, and composer Levent Geiger, who wrote the winning song ‘Stronger With You’.

Germany’s entry ‘Stronger With You’ is a heartfelt ballad about being stronger together and facing one’s fears. The lyrics embody optimism amidst the dark landscape of 2020, focusing on the importance of having courage and being hopeful for the future despite difficult circumstances.

The comments

Great contemporary sound and nice vocals. Could be on the radio in any country with a universal message. ~ Hugo

A solid and well produced song that should have lots of jury appeal. It tries to get a little anthemic towards the end and I'm not sure it reaches that level. This has some good elements but ends up feeling middle of road and lacking in impact to challenge for a win here. ~ Mike

Very well produced, with some shining vocal flourishes, but the chorus feels a little hollow. ~ Wade

Welcome to the party Germany! This is an interesting debut entry. Susan was definitely the strongest singer of all the contenders in the National Final, but I was hoping they would go away and write a completely different song. This song feels too adult for JESC. Yes JESC is heading in a more adult direction these days, but it’s too adult for even where JESC is at these days. In saying that, I do much prefer the revamp as compared to the original. It’s a much sweeter song now, and does feel less adult than the original. ~ Ally

Sandra has a beautiful tone to her voice that I could listen to all day, particularly when she sings in German.  This is a stereotypical Junior Eurovision song which didn’t really stand out enough for me although the revamp has moved it up my rankings a few places. ~ Emma

Susan has a lovely singing voice and the song is easy to listen to. The song is a bit generic. I’m not sure that the German language parts work as well as the English parts, but if the entire song was in English I don’t think it would be as good. ~ Laura

A really nice first shot at Junior Eurovision for Germany. The song is an enjoyable and an easy listen. It definitely isn't breaking any barriers or innovating but not every song has to be and it is a solid entry to the contest. ~ Cooper

A nice little 2010s vibe tune – I do enjoy the use of German here, pretty and delicate. Welcome to the Junior Club Germany – I think this is a solid little start and provides Susan with plenty opportunities to display her vocals. ~ Liv

I like what they are trying to do here and I think it’s a really talented singer and dancer here. Unfortunately the song is about 80% there without the knockout blow. Regardless, it’s nice to hear German again at Eurovision contest. ~ Dale

Germany at Junior Eurovision

Germany has previously broadcast the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2003, 2015 and 2016. 2020 marks Germany’s debut participation in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.
