Eurovision Fan of the Week - Ange from Sydney

Ange (left)

This week's Eurovision Fan of the Week has popped up on our TV screens before with her full on costumes.

We chatted to Ange from Sydney before Australia Decides on how she got into Eurovision and most importantly what WILL she be wearing this weekend. Have a read below.

What is your name and where are you from?

Ange Cafe from Sydney Australia. I grew up in Newcastle Australia.

What do you do or tell us something interesting about you?

Interesting: I love adventure holidays. Two that stand out:

  1. A polar bear expedition in the Arctic Circle - they’re so freakishly BIG!

  2. I was captured at gun point by locals in the mountains in Bolivia - escaped with just some mental scarring. Pretty exciting when I look back on it.

That is amazingly terrifying, but what a cracking story to have! ~ Aussieivison

So tell us how you got into Eurovision?

I was doing some random channel surfing and stumbled across it one year - 2009 (thanks SBS). I thought it was quirky and then stumbled on it the following year when Satellite won. I’ve been watching it ever since.

Have you been to the contest and if so, how many times?

I’ve been to Eurovision in Lisbon 2018, Aus Decides 2019 and going to both Aus Decides and Eurovision in Rotterdam 2020

Which is your favourite Eurovision year and why?

2015: Sooo many great performances, the winner was Mans/Sweden (how fab he’s at Aus Decides 2020), every one of the top 11 songs were simply awesome (Russia, Estonia and Georgia were standouts for me) and there were two great songs that missed qualifying (Switzerland and Iceland) It was a strong year

Could not agree more, 2015 is an absolute classic for the songs and of course, our debut!

You're known among Eurovision fans for your costumes, what inspires you to go all out?

Personally I don’t think I look that great blending into a crowd so I love costumes!

And I like to show artists that I support them and believe in them. They’re human, so I hope that my visual display of support from my outfit gives them confidence and a desire to bring their best.

We love that you do it, it's always such a good look!

Are you going to Australia Decides and if so.... do you have another costume planned?

Oh gosh yes I’ll be there. My wife and I have a few simple outfits planned (anything we can pop into an overnight bag for the plane), though we’re hoping to get inspiration from the jury show. Best advice we can give is to pack a hot glue gun and your creativity!

Can't wait to see what you create for Saturday!

If you could change one thing about Eurovision what would it be?

Sometimes Eurovision fans can get a little overzealous in the lead up to an event. I’d love to see fans adjust their behaviours so they’re supportive of each other’s choices of a favourite song. If you love a song, it’s not right or wrong, it’s your choice and we should all respect that.

Which artist would you like to see return to the competition?

I’m good to see new talent every year, however it’d be lovely if Polina Gagarina can qualify for Russia this year. I’d love to see her in a live performance

We would love to see Polina back, to see her vocal live would be an experience!

If you could pick only three Eurovision songs to listen to for the rest of time, what would they be?

It wouldn’t be Waterloo cos let’s face it that’s a reality for everyone, it’s still so popular...

Goodbye to Yesterday (2015) Fuego (2018) Warrior (2015)

Two of those are big Aussievision favourites, nice stuff!

Which Eurovision song:

Is the best winner?

Wild Dances or Hard Rock Hallelujah

Think you're the first person to put those songs down for this question!

Has the best live vocal?

Dami Im - I cried I was so proud

Was robbed?

Verona (Estonia) robbed from qualifying

Could not agree more!

Is the best from this decade?

Loreen, Euphoria and the OGAE Top 100 supports that.

Is your guilty pleasure?

Aphrodisiac, Greece 2012

Is your favourite National Final song (that didn't make it to Eurovision)?

2000 Whatever - Electric Fields are iconic performing in a pub setting. They were also awesome at Mardi Gras Fair Day. Any other year I’d tip them to win though KMH was fabulous.

Do you have any favourites for Australia Decides this year?

Like the rest of the country I have a few and I’ll decide who to vote for when I see them and if I’m moved by their performance: Vanessa Amorossi, Montaigne, Jaguar Jonze

Certainly a close and open year, we are reserving judgement till we see the performances as well!

Any other interesting honourable mentions?

And finally... Tonight Again, Sound of Silence, Don’t Come Easy, We Got Love or Zero Gravity?

Oh gosh - I love them all and they’re so diverse. I think I’ll choose Zero Gravity cos it was so quirky and out there. I didn’t like it originally and when I saw KMH perform it I was blown away. Serious wow factor.

Always a tough choice! Thank you so much for your time!
