Australia Decides 2022: Jude York

About the artist

Jude York is a 22-year-old singer-songwriter from Toowoomba in regional Queensland. Jude describes himself as an explosion of life, in which he combines sadness and happiness to create music which you can dance to but which also prompts an “emotional, crying, deep reflective experience”.

Jude was shortlisted as a potential artist to compete in the 2020 edition of Australia Decides with his brother Ben, forming the duo The Beamish Brothers. Their song, 'Nature', just missed out on the selection, but was showcased in a short segment that featured on the show.

About the song - 'I Won't Need to Dream'

'I Won't Need to Dream' was co-written by Jude York and Billy Stonecipher, and was inspired by the uplifting and optimistic classics of the 1930's and 1940's, such as 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' and 'Dream'.

The song was originally written as a piano ballad without Australia Decides in mind. However, when Jude and Billy decided to submit the song, they made the track longer in order to meet the submission criteria: they returned to the studio to give it a revamp with a "newer section which comes in halfway" and gives the song a "really big - like - anthemic positive feel".
